Refinishing the wood on an AK
Anyone refinish their wood on their AK's?
The couple I've shot lately have shitty looking wood. I know AK's isn't the most beautiful rifle in the world, but I think the laminated wood would really look nice refinished. If you have, what did you do?

Re: Refinishing the wood on an AK
I'm.headed to lowes to pick up supplies in a couple hours, just gonna experiment and pray, will post pics when done,
going to sand, stain, a little special something (you'll see) then use a clear poly to seal it all up

Re: Refinishing the wood on an AK
I would recommend a chemical paint remover to remove old finish and leave the sanding to 120 or higher
And don't sand the shit out of it.

Stain is done on mine, sitting in the sun, oil bleeding put of.it, doesn't seem.to be affecting the stain at all, going to clean it later before the gold leaf and poly

Still gotta do gold leaf and high gloss Polly, gonna spray the rest of the gun.down in purple power to get the 40 years of funk from the.small crevices, oil her down with clp and run a couple mags, probably by Sunday lol

Re: Refinishing the wood on an AK
Handguards are done, metal parts got a bath in some industrial degreaser then assembled and oiled where appropriate, stock is still drying
steps were:
Sand wood: 120 then 180
clean with purple power and water, allow to air dry
stain, allow to dry
high grit sand: 180+
stain again, allow to dry
clean with damp rag to remove dust and whatnot (be careful not to use a rag that will LEAVE stuff behind, I had an extra sand step because of this)
clear poly, allow to dry
2000 grit damp sand
poly again
done
I may do another wetsand after the stock is done to really put the gloss on it, im just glad it no longer looks like it came straight from Somalia

Re: Refinishing the wood on an AK
I ordered some linseed oil to try and redo the wood on my AK. Will post pictures of before and after once I get it wrapped up. Going to try to bring out a natural grain. Will it work? I don't have a clue.

KYGD , that's the original 1967 finish soaked in this for about 15 min, rinsed with water, then blow dried

This stuff works great on removing grime and caked on grease, also removes some bluing.
