Re: I get ONE battle rifle, whats my goto?
This is a good one.
Personally, I'd go AR. Its the only one on the list that I have a lot of experience with and I pretty much know it in and out. I trust it and I trust my knowledge and skill with it.

I chose AR 15 but the AK would be a close 2nd.
I think the AR has better accuracy then the others listed.
Depending on the circumstances and surroundings my MP5 would be up there too.

I chose AR because they seem to be everywhere now. Hell walmart carries them so you know in a bad situation parts will be available if you need to repair. Not to mention they are more user configurable....

bolt action .22 mag, reason being its the rifle i carried all through my childhood. Spent many hours stalking game and disposed of many pest throughout the years with it. Wont ring the fuck out of your ears and has some decent range capabilites. Would have no trouble turning a zombies brain to mush out to 150 yards.

Re: I get ONE battle rifle, whats my goto?
I only shoot the AR15 and have for 10+ years, thats not to say I dont sit down with something else from time to time but its not mine and im only shooting a few times to check it out. I only buy AR15s , nothing against others its just what works for me.
my go to, I hope to replace the scope with a Vortex 1-4, and the hand guard with a TRX or JP Vtac
here is a few others

AR with fast twist 1:7 and heavy bullets for me is the best compromise for only one. M1A for hunting or longer range engagements.

Clearly I'd go for the AK. My reasoning being that and the 10/22 are the only 2 choices I own at present. If anyone wants to give me an AR or M14 I'll consider other options <G>

Re: I get ONE battle rifle, whats my goto?
I picked the AR-15, mainly because it is lightweight, I can carry a lot of ammo for it easily, and it's very, very accurate & reliable for me. I also have the choice of grabbing my AR-10 for some serious downrange punch, even more so than an AK47.

ak>all
I picked seventy four
1/ small light bullets = easy to tote around
2/ big strong ak bolt = better than ar15
3/ tapered casing ammo = reliability
4/ a somewhat large amount of ammo comes packaged in watertight brick form and arrives at my door for about $140 shipped
6/ nowhere to mount little gadgets and flippy sights, $100 lights, or $$$$ optics

Re: I get ONE battle rifle, whats my goto?
I chose the AR. Mainly because they are plentiful and "easier" to shoot for a lot of people. I figure, if I NEED a battle rifle, I want to be able to scrounge/appropriate parts and ammo. Also need it to be something my wife can handle and she ain't gonna spend any time on the range with anything that has significant recoil.

Re: I get ONE battle rifle, whats my goto?
I picked M-14 cause I just bought one (although mine's a Chinese knockoff). I know the AR is a popular platform but here they are limited to range-only use, and I have enough pistols that already restrict me in that area. As much as I'd like an AR, right now I'd rather have the freedom to take my rifles anywhere I want/need.

Only issue I have with everyone's love for ar15's is that I see nobody with stock ar's really using them that way. They exchange 30 parts on them and treat them like a Christmas tree hanging ornaments all over them and end up with a $2000 rifle meanwhile it isn't an AR anymore really when all the controls have been tweaked. I mean it is but you get my drift. Ps I have one and am buying more but just prefer Coke to Pepsi when I have to choose.

Re: I get ONE battle rifle, whats my goto?
That's one of the attractions for a lot of people though: the aftermarket support is endless and they are easy to customize to individual taste. Is it necessary, no. But its no different with cars. If I were to buy an AR, I would keep it basic. If I could upgrade the actual performance I'd look at that but I personally have no interest in fitting it with every accessory available just for the sake of doing it.
To each their own though.

Re: I get ONE battle rifle, whats my goto?
At some point I actually want to build a 20" A1 style rifle and leave it that way. Classic Vietnam era M-16 looks.Jackalo626 wrote:Only issue I have with everyone's love for ar15's is that I see nobody with stock ar's really using them that way. I get ONE battle rifle, whats my goto?
I can get that but the answer stock for stock is what's weird to me. Like you mention cars and I live cars, even of you asked a person who is into imports which car is best out of box for performance they wouldn't say a civic. A civic can be fast if you put $10,000 into it but a cobra mustang is better out of box for speed. Customizing is fun but I just feel $400 ak's get put against $2000 ar's and nobody compares $2000 ak's to them.

At one point..... But most aren't and you know what I'm getting at. I actually prefer my a1 that I had but I wanted to see the hype with flat tops and red dots etc and still like iron sights better.

Re: I get ONE battle rifle, whats my goto?
So, I am assuming that if I am choosing ONE battle rifle it means that stuff is real bad. I would have to face the reality that I am not young and spry. I need every advantage I can get so I am going to go with 308 for range and penetration.
The only 308 I have is the SCAR. Thus my vote.

Re: I get ONE battle rifle, whats my goto?
Well, ideally, I chose the M-14 for a few reasons:
It has the power to be effective at long range,
It has the power to defeat more cover/armor,
It works fine out of the box without adding accessories,
And it can be used to take big game if the need should arise.
The downside to the M-14 over the AR is:
Cost of ammo,
Can't carry as much,
And weight.
Realistically, I would probably use one of my AR's, as I have more mags/ammo/parts.
I would be well armed with any of the available choices.
