Want a surplus 1911 pistol from the U.S. Army? Here is your chance

The U.S. Army is planning to transfer up to 10,000 surplus 1911 pistols to the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) as early as 2018, according to the Army Times. The .45 caliber pistols would then be put up for sale to civilians who qualify to purchase them from CMP. The move comes as part of the 2018 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which would order the sale of the handguns, and which only awaits the approval of President Trump to come into effect.
The Army replaced the 1911 back in 1986 with the M9 Beretta 9mm pistol, according to Army Times. The Beretta is now in the process of being replaced by the Sig Sauer P320 “Modular Handgun System,” which will be known as the M17 (full size) and M18 (compact) in U.S. Army nomenclature.

Oh yeah! Even if I am not able to get one of these, prices should come down overall so us broke folks have a chance.

Wouldn’t bet on it. And the process for getting one, you basically have to go through two NICS checks. I’d love to have an old 1911 but I’m not gonna drop $1K on a used and abused rack grade pistol.

Everything I'm reading suggests that these are ragged the F out.
It came from the internet so take that info for what you paid for it.

I imagine these are only good for display purpose only. Still would be neat to own one, if the price is right.WLJ wrote:Everything I'm reading suggests that these are ragged the F out.

Prices will be $800-$1,000 for ‘rack grade’ pistols. The director of the CMP wanted to ‘price them out of the hands of anyone who would do something nefarious with them’.

Are they going to grind off the bayonet lugs?

Re: Surplus 1911s going on sale!!
Save your money, you can already get one in better shape than rack grade for 12 to 1500. Much better.
The only thing is that it may not be COLT marked. CMP will get some of everything, COLT, USS and SINGER are the better ones but they will cull them out and price them waaaaaaay up there. Most will probably be remington rand or ithaca (which is ok, but pretty common around).

They’ve already said any rare types will be pulled out and sent to their auctionsDave1965 wrote:Save your money, you can already get one in better shape than rack grade for 12 to 1500. Much better.

Re: Surplus 1911s going on sale!!
I think the 2 background checks is absurd. They won’t let me use my C&R FFL for it. Do they realize I can buy an out of state machine gun that is C&R and fill out the paperwork and once it gets stamped, it’s mailed directly to my house. But I guess a 1911 is more dangerous than a Browning 1917 with 250 round belts.

Sounds like they're pricing them to make damn sure the ones that used them won't get one!

Re: Surplus 1911s going on sale!!
This pic was in the first link for the CMP. I seriously doubt any of the pistols will be in this condition (maybe the odd auction grade piece) so I wouldn't get too upset about missing out on this program. They aren't blowing out mint un-issued pistols in a lottery you won't win. There are lots of GI pistols out there if you want one. The prices they list in the second link actually sound ok for the stated condition ranges given what values are these days, but you also have to remember these should really only be purchased as a conversation piece or as a collectible you don't plan on using (much).
If you just want a WW2 style shooter, buy a Springfield GI or a Rock Island or an Auto Ordnance. They look and feel the same, and are reasonable facsimiles of the old A1's, and you don't have to worry so much about if it breaks.
Granted there is an appeal to having the genuine article....
Just my 2 cents and its worth exactly that. I'm not involved with the sorting and grading of the pistols they receive, maybe I'm wrong and they have a motherlode of really nice stuff to sell.

Re: Surplus 1911s going on sale!!
If they have one of these up though, buy it. Don't ask questions, just buy it. Then look them up and thank me. Not likely, but one can dream.....
