Century Arms CETME - the monkeys at it again...
picked up a CETME because I've always wanted one. Former owner said he put 5-600 rounds through it without any problems. He also showed me that the front sight was slightly canted to the left, which is SOP for Century.
I was going to just refinish the wood, but then I got to looking at the drunken chimp paint job on it and figured I could do better. So after having it for all of two hours I tore it down-
I started on the finish which turned out to be powder coat. Finally ended up with an aircraft stripper to get the crap off.
So in the process of this I realized that the front sight isn't canted, the cocking tube is actually bent. Like a banana. Which explains why the bolt carrier wouldn't slide out easily -I had to reach in an pull it out. There is quite a bit of drag in there.
Ok- so I understand the triple frame (front sight tower) is soldered on and then the sling ring pin is staked in there. I think the first thing I'll try is heating up the tower enough to melt the solder and try to budge the tower over to the right, and hopefully, that will straighten the cocking tube up.
How does this approach sound?

yeah- I got the chimp weld ground off.
My method worked to straighten the triple frame, but the tube is still bent- it doesn't look as bad with the triple straight at least.
I gotta think about the tube...

Only way to straighten is to remove tube , straighten with mandrel or new part and reweldkokopelli wrote:yeah- I got the chimp weld ground off.
