300 Blackout

Post by icehouse1 » Tue May 20, 2014 4:34 pm

I have my Honey Badger Lower Ar that I want to be able to put multiple calibers through.. I would like to know what length barrel and gas tube length you would use for a 300 blackout in a pistol version. I want to shoot whatever ammo I can find at Walmart or wherever. I will not be getting a suppressor, so that is out of the question. What do you recommend?

Honestly I wouldn't make 300BO a pistol cartridge. Nice caliber for longer barrels and ballistics will suffer with anything shorter than 16". I been looking at building a 20" rifle version myself.
Just my opinion.

300blk was designed to burn all its powder in a 9" barrel and a carbine gas system with the ability to run suppressed or unsupressed on a single platform.

From what I have read on another forum, it seems that it is opposite.
Im going by what I have read and what others posted about their builds.

I understand that any rifle cartridge larger than a .223 will out perform the .223 in any way shape or form, but the ballistic standpoint IMHO is wasted in a pistol version of a lager caliber like the 300BO.
The 9" barrel has impressive ballistics as well, but I guess I prefer rifle cartridges for rifles.

Id go 9" 300blk if i were building a pistol/sbr

If it were a carbine/rifle in non5.56 id do a 6.5

Don't get me wrong a 16" 300blk would be sweet. If I can ever get some free cash for some more gun stuff I will be building or buying a SBR upper for my pistol or building a whole 16" rifle. Mainly be a deer gun for the girl since she likes the AR and can handle it well in her small stature. Mine will be suppressed though, just wish the stamp would process faster.

I just don't like the idea of them being able to come into my house anytime that they wish to see what I have.

There is very little loss of velocity from a 16" barrel 300blk to a 9". We saw less than 100fps with the same ammo, on the same day over the same chrono. 16" had a carbine gas and the 9" had a pistol gas system. Both work well, remember the 300blk uses pistol powder and it burns quicker than a rifle powder. At some point there will be diminishing returns from barrel length and you will actually loose velocity due to friction in the barrel. I had a friend that built a 20" rifle and it was actually slower than the 16". Now if you were a handloader you could use a slower burning powder and use the extra barrel length to burn the slower powder and gain velocity, but is limited by case capacity to see very significant gains. Off the shelf 300blk ammo is going to be a faster burning powder.
Good luck and have fun,the 300blk is a fun round to play with and has lots of potential.
