Muzzle brake help

Post by RampRat » Thu Oct 03, 2013 9:08 am

I am down to the last part on my first AR. Just need a muzzle brake/comp. I have my list down to 3. The battle comp, PWS FCS 556, and the spikes dyna comp. I would like to see what you guys think about these. Also are there any others that I should consider. Thanks for the help.

If it was me I would get one that would allow a suppressor to QD to it.

I've for a BattleComp 2.0 on mine, love it. And it's dimensionally the same as an A2, so a suppressor like the Gemtech halo will fit on it.

I have a spikes dynacomp pinned and welded on my spikes rifle. I like it, seems to do well. I don't really have a scientific comparison for it but I know I like it better than the birdcage ones on most of my others. Seems to be 90 dollars on the spikes website. I bought the complete upper with their BAR rail and the dynacomp already on there for around 800+ if I remember right.

Let me introduce another to your list...

The Bravo Company Gunfighter Compensator
http://www.bravocompanymfg.com/bcm_comp/
http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/BCMGUNFI ... -0-556.htm

The performance, according to many users, is barely distinguishable between the performance of the Battlecomp. The main difference is a price difference of ~$75.

Get the cheapest one you can, this aint a fasion show. It dont make you faster, it dont make you more accurate, and really its only bragging rights at the BBQ and shoot at some static range with people who base the effectiveness of a rifle on what kind of fancy BS you can put on it, like some bitches at church...... Did you see her shoes, and her purse, that had to,be a knock off. Eat glass spit fire and stop painting your nails.

I disagree with "it don't make you faster". If you intend to do competition like 3 gun a good comp CAN make you faster by decreasing the time to get back on target for follow up shots. An AR may not have a lot of muzzle rise to begin with due to the reasonably low recoil, but when competitions come down to seconds or less, every little bit helps.

In a recent trade I ended up with a Noveske Fire Pig. I wouldn't have bought it myself, but it directs sound and gases away from shooter. From what I've read, it also improves back pressure for reliability. Just saying.

I have the Claymore brake on my RRA Coyote gun. It came with the gun when I got it, but does the same thing and looks really cool (ok, not really but sounded good anyway).

Loved my surefire brake. Was loud but worked, zero movement almost.

Have a BCM comp on the way to try this time around.

This is one part of a gun that never made a difference to me.
I could not tell a difference in shooting with or with out or what type of brake.
Some look really cool, but if it cost more then $10, I don't need it. My AR is not entered in any fashion shows.

As with any tool, the first step in deciding is defining the mission. This is true whether you are selecting which screwdriver to use or which airplane to buy, and it definitely applies here.

Is your priority to minimize muzzle flash in order to not be as visible shooting at night in darkened concealment?

Is your priority to minimize noise behind the gun and funnel it to the sides?

Is your priority to minimize muzzle flip in order to remain on target, see your shots and effect quicker and more accurate follow up shots?

Is your priority, if none of the first three really matter, to look the coolest? (Nothing wrong with this, by the way, our creations are a reflection of ourselves, and who doesn't want to look cool?)

Is it some combination of the above?

As others have said, the A2 is a good item, and certainly holds its own in the flash hiding business, etc. Plus it's cheap. Once you want to get into the other priorities, other options may suit you better.

Interesting comparisons below, including in the video how noise is affected from different angles with different hiders. All are shot at night, in order to show the flash effects. I believe most of the ones being discussed are shown.

Part 2 concerning noise levels

A video of several being shot at night, each example from 3 angles - 90 degree, shooters view, 25yds down range - this one is a quicker view though fewer products were shot

In the for what its worth department, I just did a build with a 20" HBAR, trying for something with a tad more precision ability. (Doing this one for now, put off the dream build until I feel better about parts availability and price LOL) It is wearing the A2, and is very nice as it is now. However, I am considering changing it for a Battle Comp or the new one from Rainier in order to enhance the ability to stay on target with minimal muss and fuss, improving shot-to-shot consistency. YMMV.
