Z-Fest proofing
In my drunkeness this weekend I left my Benelli Nova on the wet ground and have a little barrel rust. I want to be able to not have to worry about rust with it setting around as my HD gun with temp changes or laying in a field by my truck and stuff like that...haha My question is, what is the best paint to shoot the whole gun with being metal and plastic? Best way to prep it. Primer or no primer? I don't care much what it looks like. I just want to make sure it stays a good functioning, non-rusty POS...

Re: Z-Fest proofing
Most guys who spray paint use regular spray paint like rustoleum and no prep besides rubbing alcohol to remove grease. That way nothing is permanent and comes off in case of resell. Stays on fairly good and if it wears off then just touch up.

Re: Z-Fest proofing
Anecdotal evidence (aka simple observations, not stringent testing) seems to point to Aervoe being an excellent paint for weapons painting, better than Rustoleum or Krylon.

I'm not to worried about it coming off, I would rather it not. I just don't want to pay $150-200 to have it coated. Who carries the stuff your talking about Whoots? I've never heard of it.

Re: Z-Fest proofing
Guncote or Ceracote will definitely rust proof just about any weapon as long as it is tight and uncompromised.

Re: Z-Fest proofing
Gunkote, Cerakote, DuraCoat, and the other specific firearms coatings are all excellent, but I assumed you didn't want to spend that much or have someone else do it for you. They are what I would recommend if you are willing to do it. I'm not exactly sure where to find Aervoe locally, but you can get it online... even in 'camo packs'.

A good scuff up with a sanding sponge
Clean with a volitive cleaner (above mention alcohol or lacquer thinner or acetone, my preferred )
And spray paint it
I had a spray paint finish on my Mossberg for 25 years and the only wear is on the wood stock

Re: Z-Fest proofing
Plastic is tough to get any paint to stick too.
Even the gun coatings
Due to the release agents in the material from the press.
That is why I mentioned the sand paper scuff

Get off your stool and walk to the back and get a can of plasti kote in flat black. It matches pretty good.

Re: Z-Fest proofing
You would assume correct on the price Whoots, I'll definitely be looking into the other stuff you mentioned though. If the gun specific coatings are the only thing that would offer real protection I would just break down and spend the money to do one of them.
That was my biggest question Cranky, I know on car parts it's by far the hardest to get it to stick to. Think a etching primer like you would use on a bare metal car panel would help at all? Sorry for all the car references. I'm a car guy, can't help it...haha

Re: Z-Fest proofing
Never thought about just trying to match the barrel to the plastic... Good call Nemo! I'll take a flat and satin or semi and see which is closer.nemo wrote:Get off your stool and walk to the back and get a can of plasti kote in flat black. It matches pretty good.

Since you like to drink to drunkenness
A finish that is barf proof might be a better idea.

Nepot has a good idea as plastic does not rust

I'm a trooper, I'm always one of the last ones out and RARELY puke (cough, Rachel...haha) so it's all good. I'm not sure anything holds up to puke though. I've seen what it does to the sides of cars many times...haha

Re: Z-Fest proofing
Thinking I'll just be painting the barrel and see how that holds up. If it doesn't hold up as well as I like, I'll probably go ahead and have it coated.86 slo-vo wrote:If its a decent gun and your keeping it...cerakote.
