Mag carriers
I finally got a gun/holster/belt set up (Shield 9/Bama iwb/Beltman) I'm very comfortable carrying. Now I need to know about mag carriers. What are you guys opinions? Iwb, owb, leather, kytex, bullets forward, bullets rearward?

Re: Mag carriers
one in my pocket
as for in a holster, it depends on which way you grab them on which way they will sit
i just used some bladetechs today for IDPA, though I don't wear them normally

Re: Mag carriers
I have a DeSantis leather twin mag for my Shield. I wear it OWB like I wear the Shield since I rarely tuck in my shirt outside of work. The mags are oriented so that when I pull them out with my left hand I just rotate them to face up and insert into the magwell.

Re: Mag carriers
I want them now for a RWI basic pistol coarse but that's the main reason I want them though. I would like to start shooting some matches. Most of the sales things seem to say that bullet forward is the normal but that seems backwards to me when the mags are pointed down in carrier. I guess I should watch some competition shooters on YouTube and see if one way is more common than the other.shelbygoat wrote:one in my pocket

Re: Mag carriers
So what your saying is I need to hurry up and develop a mag carrier for the shield?

Re: Mag carriers
Probably to late for the rwi class on 1/18 but would definitely be interested. Also in M&P and Glock ones probably. Not sure if I would want them iwb though.

Re: Mag carriers
I've got kydex holsters for my pistols and mags. Bravo Concealment for my XDM and Sabre Dynamics for my XSD. Two mag carrier for both, bullets forward. When you reach down to grab a mag your index finger lines up with the front of the mag. All you have to do is flip your wrist around and the mag is lined up with the mag well.

Re: Mag carriers
That would be nice. Mine works but it's not made for the Shield. It's made for double stack mags but I have the adjustments cranked all the way down.Bama wrote:So what your saying is I need to hurry up and develop a mag carrier for the shield?

Re: Mag carriers
I think I'll hold off until after the rwi coarse and see what it feels like both ways. Bullets forward feels totally unnatural to me. Maybe a bad habit I'm doing that needs to be changed...

Re: Mag carriers
Feels perfectly natural to me. If I was going more for speed like in a timed competition I'd just drop the empty mag from the pistol instead of retaining it. I tried a couple with them facing backwards and it was not quick or easy for me to even do it

Re: Mag carriers
When you pull it bullets rearward hand comes straight up and into the mag well, you don't even have to twist it like bullets forward. Your way is definitely the more normal apparently but just feels weird to me.

Re: Mag carriers
I need a mag carrier for a single 19 May iwb. Most are to small and press into the body too much

Re: Mag carriers
I go bullets to the rear. Most people say bullets front because of the index finger thing.Niceguy wrote:When you pull it bullets rearward hand comes straight up and into the mag well, you don't even have to twist it like bullets forward. I have been bullets to the rear for 13 years now. Like you, it felt more natural so that's the way I went. What you are doing is building muscle memory and turning a fine motor skill into a gross motor skill over time. If you already prefer bullets to the rear then you may as well stay that way.
If your edc gun rig had open top blade tech mag pouches oriented at an angle for quick draw, and your ccdw gun had a mag funnel, then maybe bullets front would be better but nobody does that. If a majority of your shooting was already done bullets front from competition, I'd Definitely stay that way. But since you are a clean slate I'd stay with what feels best from the get go.
In a ccdw rig, retention is more important to me than speed so my spare mag is either in a pocket or a deep mag pouch that goes almost all the way up the mag. That style doesn't lend itself to the finger technique.
