I don't know where you would have heard this.

There is no evidence that there were ever any Neanderthals in Africa.

I can see an article in the future: "All western Muslims part caucasian, genetics confirm".

I may have been remembering wrong and it might have been Cro Magnon, not Neanderthal.

If I stumble upon the article again I'll post it.

"Cro Magnon" is a term that has become virtually meaningless. Basically, it is used to mean early modern humans found in Europe.

If you were to gather all the human remains *ever* found they wouldn't fill a coffin. As such, most of the sweeping conclusions made about early humans prior to the advent of modern gene sequencing barely rise above the level of conjecture. I'm not saying the folks who drew those conclusions weren't doing good work; rather, I'm saying the HUGE gaps in the fossil record make it impossible to arrive at "scientific proof" from physical examination of remains and associated artifacts.

I just read some stuff saying that the Neanderthals specialized in living in colder weather and night hunting were isolated from African humans or cromagnons untill they developed sewing and warm clothing. The African hunters tended to follow herds and pick off weak old or young that fell behind, and only during the daylight. This allowed them to exist with the neanderthals and not really directly compete for food. During this time the cross breeding occurred because the neanderthal women were more attractive due to their blonde or red hair and blue or green eyes. This was something not found in african DNA.
