KY CCDW renewal wait begins
Mrs. Gunsmokin and I dropped off our CCDW renewal today at the Jefferson Co. Sheriff. Wondering who else has renewed lately and how long it generally takes to get them back.

Re: KY CCDW renewal wait begins
I renewed/paid on 12/9/13 and got my letter to pick up on or around 1/2/14. Picked it up today. So less than a month for me

Do you keep your current card while waiting for renewal? How does that work? I got my ccw in 2012, just wondering what to look forward to.

Renew as soon as you get the packet so your current one does not expire while you are waiting. Keep your current card until you get the new one. You must surrender the old one to pick up the new one.
New permits were issued in about 1 month for members of my last class. I spoke with CCDW training folks, they are caught up right now. I imagine it won't be that way all year, especially when the weather gets nicer.

Yep, you keep your current card during the renewal process, but if you wait until it expires you have to wait until the new one comes in before you can legally CC again. So don't wait to renew.drifter0069 wrote:Do you keep your current card while waiting for renewal? How does that work? I got my ccw in 2012, just wondering what to look forward to.

Re: KY CCDW renewal wait begins
A renewal notice is sent out 3 months before your license expires. I renewed my as soon as I got the notice
New license came in with effective date when old license expired. Sheriff told me to destroy old license when it expired. This was in 2011.

Youngest daughter is the only one left that needs hers in our house. I told her the wait was short right now so I think she is more motivated to finally do it. Just trying to find a class with her work & school schedule is tough.

I wish we had Indiana's conceal carry permit rules. They pay one time and take the class and its good for life. I've heard they're in the process of changing that. Guess they seen how much money Kentucky is making off of it.

Here would be my ideal scenario: Constitutional Carry across the nation, no permits required.
That is probably a tall order right now, but I would like to see Kentucky take a step in the right direction and pass a constitutional carry here, but leave the permit system in place for those that want it. This would allow for those that want to spend the money to buy weapons from an FFL with no NICS check call at the time of purchase and to have the coverage under the reciprocity agreements with other States.
My understanding is that with a lifetime permit there are no provisions for the 'no NICS check' purchase at a FFL. The 5 year permits, along with annual NICS checks done by the State Police allow this. Probably not important to most folks but a few like the convenience.
As far as making money, I can't see that Kentucky would be making money on this process. They are paying a lot of employees in the training division and administrative divisions for this program, producing a lot of documentation at no cost, and all the future retirement and benefits each of those State employees will get. I imagine that it is an annual net loss.

ChopperDoc, interesting line of thought on constitutional carry.ChopperDoc wrote:Shineybore wrote:I wish we had Indiana's conceal carry permit rules. Do you think there should be a federal statute requiring all states to recognize CCDW as a universal right for the law-abiding? I am torn about that. Not in the sense that it isn't a good idea, just in the fed vs state power struggle sense. I think we all agree that all law-abiding citizens should exercise their 2A freedom to the fullest extent possible. I just doubt if the federal route has even the remotest possibility of happening, at least in today's climate. Then, there is the issue of state's rights. Wouldn't we rather leave as much power possible with the individual states, than rely on a ham-fisted federal bureaucracy to do the right thing? Just a thought.

I believe the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution actually is a nationwide CCDW permit....
That said: I have vehemently opposed any new federal legislation requiring the individual states to honor every other state's carry permit. This, in my opinion, opens the door to federal control and resrrictions in the name of interstate commerce. Passing those kinds of federal laws cannot have our best interests in mind over the long term.
As it is now we have some big hurdles. Heller made the determination that the 2A is an individual right and then slapped a statement in the decision that 'reasonable' restrictions on that right are in line with the interpretation of the 2A. I guess ensures we will fight over what reasonable is and who gets to decide what reasonable is in court for years to come.
I certainly do not want a federal agency created to implement and oversea a federal CCDW mandate to be making those decisions and overriding the headway we have made in a majority of the individual States.
