Link to a newly created forum for KY beekeepers.
http://bluegrassbees.com/forums/
Bigger bee forums are helpful but a more regional bee keeping forum that is specific to beeks in KY is helpful because beekeeping is about locality.
Feel free to join.

I read the entire thread last night. Very interesting hobby. I've thought about it a few times but never knew how to start. Thanks for sharing your experiences!

Yeah, looks like that forum fizzled out.
Here is a link to another good one I participate in.

No problem.

I highly recommend this hobby if you are interested.
I've probably got more out of this endeavor than any hobby I've ever meddled with.
Met some great people & have learned a lot.
Warning though, it's very addictive.

How do the bees stand up to extended/severe cold/ice/snow like we've experienced this winter and last?

I saw this pop up somewhere. Sounds pretty nifty to me. What do you think?

Unless the swarm is separated, bees don't die from the cold. Typically if a swarm dies in the cold, it is by suffocation from trying to stay warm.

Can't believe I missed this thread. Just read through it... nice work scorpion

Yeah, it's not the cold itself that gets them.
It's usually starvation, where they run out of food/fuel to stay warm. That's why you try to make sure they have plenty of stores.
As for the Flow Hive...I have heard some saying it works, but I am kinda skeptical.

I harvested 40lbs of honey from one super here recently. Been selling at $6 per half pint. It's been flying off the shelf. Gonna have to get back in there and harvest some more.
Feels good to be making money off this hobby.

How long did it take to start making money at it?

3 years lol
It's got a steep learning curve but I hurt myself by starting out following bad advice. There is some bad theory out there and lots of keyboard beekeepers. I didn't know anyone who did this so I kinda self taught by reading and the interwebs. No mentor.
I can be kinda stubborn at times and I refused to give up.

My wife never had an interest in it until she saw the money rolling in. Lol
I can see this being something I will keep doing as I become an old man.

I love honey and it really helps my allergies and it's getting really hard to find close by people doing it. There were quite a few and now, not so much.
