Be carefull with drill press use

Post by guncrank1 » Mon Nov 04, 2013 9:35 am

Had a mechanic get his finger about twisted off in a drill bit because he was wearing work gloves and trying to hold the part in the vise.

Two things wrong
Gloves and not using the proper holding device i.e. the vise in the press.

Last year corp. safety made all the plants in NA use chuck guards on all the drill presses in the repair shops .

ooooh, ouch. I was using a hand drill with a pretty large sized bit, holding the part against my thigh when it slipped and the bit wrapped up my pants- when it had pulled all the material tight it then wrapped my skin. I was able to let go of the button to stop it. My thigh looked like I had been shot at a glancing angle. It all took about 1/5 of a second.

My best one was using an auto tapper. The 4 inch coil of metal corkscrewed in my finger. I sat there wondering what would hurt worse, unscrew it or cut flap of skin to get it out. Good thing the shop steward didn't see this.
Oh, how so high they fly........ only further to fall.

Seen more than my fair share of guys getting fingers broken and twisted
Skin removed and fingers pulled off.
Long hair and apron ties as well can get caught.

This guy was wearing Body Guard brand woven fiber with nitrile covering , not leather so his gloves was thinner but still got caught.

Mine was a hole saw drill bit running amuck and cutting my thumb to the bone! I treated them with more respect after that

My lathe tried to hurt me last night....I was drilling a pen blank with a 6-inch long 7mm diameter drill bit...something went wrong, and the chuck jaw, drill bit, wood, drill bit, and drill chuck all went flying in an instant.

The drill chuck hit me in the arm...for a second I thought it might be broken...thankfully it just has a knot on it, and thankfully it hit me in the arm instead of my face.

This whole process was done in the blink of an eye.

Lets skip the usual "pics or it didn't happen"
There are criminals among us who are both homicidal and incorrigible. Their parents took a shot at civilizing them and failed. Their school teachers took a shot at them and failed. The odds are overwhelming that government welfare programs and penal institutions took a shot at them and failed. If it ever becomes your turn to take a shot at them, don’t fail.

Haven't done that but had a table saw throw back a chunk of wood that imbedded itself into the pegboard.

The other wood shop teacher in high school was coming through the back entrance to our shop room and a board flew out of the table saw (while student was screwing and not doing what he was supposed to be doing...) and hit him in the nuts and he left in an ambulance. Rumor always was he lost a nut from it but never been told for sure by him or our shop teacher...haha

I sent a 18 inch masonry bit through a live circuit breaker box once. Dude was without power all day. Sparks went "everwure" I didn't have a scratch.
