A 1911 dropped in sand = a paper weight.
I like 1911's and own a few myself, but the Glock is the best choice IMHO for combat.
Nostalgia is great, but let it go.

I absolutely LOVE 1911's! I shoot considerably better with them. I like shooting them better. If my life depended on my pistol and I had unknown resources at my disposal (cleaning supplies and what have you), I would (and do) ABSOLUTELY choose a Glock...

So what is that... a Glock that doesn't run or a 1911 that does?

Lol. I've never understood the sole 1911's don't work, or you have to spend $3000 to get one that does. My $350 RIA has been flawless aside from a feeding issue that was due to cheap magazines, not the gun. I actual read an opinion somewhere that blamed a lot of the 1911's "issues" on guns being made with ever tighter tolerances on a design that wasn't really meant for that.

Anybody who has ever shot a few pistol matches knows that nothing chokes as frequently as 1911s. Magazines are the most common culprit; even well-designed, well-made mags are fragile compared to other designs. Ammo is the second problem, as some guns are very sensitive to variations in nose profile or OAL. Actual problems with the gun (such as extractor issues) run a distant third. (Now that I think about it, shooter errors probably come in third--if not second.)

One could argue that mag problems or ammo problems aren't a "gun problem"--and they'd be correct in a sense. But a malfunction is a malfunction, and my first three criteria when selecting a gun to carry or keep in my nightstand are reliability, reliability, and reliability. The strengths of the 1911 (the trigger, accuracy, etc.) are pretty far down the list.

But damn, they are beautiful to look at, and nothing is more fun to shoot.

FWIW, the glocks I have had, have had more problems than the 1911's I have had.

Bouncing brass off my head, fte, failure to seat, problems with mags, etc.

With factory loaded or military grade ammo I have never had a problem in a 1911 more than a few stovepipes.

That's with multiple Colts, Kimbers, Springfields, RIAs, multiple US Property ones, the one Thompson and several Norinco's and probably a few I forgot I have had over the years.

My daughter can't shoot my Glocks without brass hitting the top of her head.

In all seriousness, you're absolutely correct in that *all* guns have problems. When somebody says their gun is "flawless" my first thought is, "You haven't shot it enough."

Far be it from me to question anyone's choice in firearms; if it works for you, it works.

As for myself, I just checked my logs (I'm anal that way), and my last Glock malfunction of any kind was on June 9, 2012; I was lying on my left side, shooting under a sheet of plywood that was replicating the bottom of my vehicle. I had a stovepipe, caused either by me limp-wristing in an awkward position, weak ejection, or the case bouncing off the plywood back into the action. It has fired thousands of trouble-free rounds since, but "flawless" it isn't.

ETA: I don't love Glocks. They are ugly, and they have no soul. But I love the way they run.

I am aware of that in the most recent episode but have had it happen several times over the years, always with the same glock and not with another glock shot the same day. I have also rested the pistol on top of a table and made sure to hold it firm and got the same reaction

I ran both my 1911 and my G27 in the pistol matches at TGG back in the day. The only time the 1911 gave me a problem was when I was low on ammo and shooting cheap HPs. It became a bolt action. That's when I found out the mags sucked. After the match borrowed a Wilson mag from another guy, loaded the same ammo in it and it ran fine. Went home and put all the ACT mags I had up for sale and bought all Wilson 47Ds...no problems since.

The G27 choked on me several times in the matches. It did not like to run WWB ammo when shooting fast. Never had any problem with any other ammo, but it just didn't like WWB for whatever reason. I've got nothing against Glocks, just like my 1911 better. I'd carry a Glock over the 1911 if for no other reason than the lighter weight and higher mag capacity. All steel 1911 is just heavier than I care to carry every day.
