Anyone here know if I can put a 1999 mustang gt engine in my 1997. The 1999 is the first year of the PI heads and coil on plug ignition. I'm wanting to keep my wiring harness and my aftermarket ingition system with coil packs and plugs and not use the 1999 wiring harness.

not familiar with this swap. but with some quick reading I got this.

Tons of ppl have done it. It's straight forward with only minor issues to overcome.

The 97 has a Romeo motor. It will save the effort of possibly swapping new flywheel/flexplat if you stick with another Romeo motor.

The 99-00 Mustang has a Windsor.
Get a Romeo from a 2001+ Mustang, Crown Vic, Grand Marquis, Town Car.
The secret is to retain the original car's PCM, induction, fuel injectors, ignition, wiring harness, electronics.
If you are interested in converting to COP ignition, consider a product such as this.

The conversion is not required. Will run coil packs without problems.

but the guy making them posted that 4 years ago. it is a mustang with enough digging you can find a swap cable I am sure.


In my days of playing with the Talons we would replace the all in one coil pack with 3 seperate COP's this was done by basically re-wiring the harness to signal each firing pair of coils instead of the coil pack. depending on your ignition system this could be fairly easy to do if you have decent electrical skills. give me a wiring diagram off the ECU and engine harness and I could tell you how to wire it up

the last and bigest problem however with leaving your stock ECU will be tuning for the new motor will be all kinds of off.

Most good shops will charge about $500 for a dyno tune.

I got the engine home sunday. Waaiting until warmer weather to swap it in. Just need to decide what all to do to it till then.
Clean it, paint some things, compression test, and timing chains for sure.

I have a ton of engine and electrical parts, but they are all for DOHC cars.

Blakenship is the man. Sometimes he's backed up and takes a while to get you in there but does great work.
