The commissioner said the guns are illegal for the public to use and should be for the sheriff's office as well.

The commissioner is obviously an idiot and knows nothing about the law. So sad.

We're able to take two firearms that have no current applicable use to the sheriff's office and exchange those for 88 rifles that will be deployed to officers on the street who don't have them today, at no cost to the county," Stanley said.

I think this is the real reason

Hey County comminisionar you just lost about 48,000 dollars.
The FFL just got a bargain.
Two transferable tommy guns for a crap load of cheaper rifles.

Sounds like a good deal for everyone--including the taxpayer.

I think thats a pretty fair deal for everyone. Thats free market if the winner beat out 23 other people with the highest bid. The more valuable ones are the 1921 model, not the 1928. Thats splitting hairs but its true. Plus condition is everything. I have seen better and worse for money up and down the spectrum.
I think the handguns for the 176 magazines is where its at.
