Got this gun from my grandfather when he passed, story I was told is it was his Uncles who was LEO back in the day
Smith and Wesson
.32 Long (Barrel Stamped 32 Long CTG)
Pinned Barrel
Inside of cylinder lock stamped MOD-30
Firing Pin Attached to Hammer

I apologize if this is just an easy find, I just know nothing about wheel guns or old guns, is it possible to find out manufacture date and such thru serial?

Not familiar with these personally. But S&W SN's will tell you the date. There is a book that lists basically every S&W made. Or you could email S&W and ask. I'm good at dating J frame .38s from a partial list I found printed online.

Good luck.

Googlin' around and found this. Looks like an owners manual in a pdf format. Thought I'd post link for you to check out.

My grandfather was a part time deputy and full time coal miner. This was in eastern KY. He had one similar to yours from, I think, the 1920's or 1930's. I am sure the site Wash mentioned will be a wealth of info. Geno

Thanks wash! I now know I can shoot the 32acp round out of it, I have fired this gun as a kid and plan to do so again, the finish is BAD...but idk if I want to have it refinished or not if I do I will get this done

Thoughts? the reason I wouldnt is due to the history, but on the same note I want to be able to give it to my kids some day

I'd say keep it as-is. Clean it up, replace any parts if necessary, enjoy. If you swap anything out, keep the originals (never know). Might not be a million dollar pistol but original in decent condition is worth more than refinished, no matter how well it was done. I'm a sucker for older firearms, hate to see any of em altered. Just my opinion.

Sorry for your loss.

It should be an I frame, not a J frame, but I'm not 100% certain of it. I know mine is, but mine is a pre-Mod 30 Hand Ejector according to Mr. Jinks at S&W.

I got it when my FIL died.

I'd leave it as is. Just clean and oil it regularly, and it should be fine to pass on to the next generation.

Yes refinishing will destroy any collecter value.
Even if it stats in family.
