Well this actually has trigger time in combat, with I believe the fabled lug.

That lug didn't make much of WW2, maybe in 45 some limited use.

I have a picture of my father in Korean War with his carbine that he had his wife's name on the stock.
Funny thing is, he came home from the war, she had left him and gone home to the parents.

The .30 M1 carbine was originally a rifle for officers , so they had more firepower than a .45
There was no need for a lug.

It started to be used by troops because it was easier to pack than Garand.
So a lug was added ( like in Korea) for a bayonet for use in hand to hand.
I do believe there was a modified knife to use as the bayonet.

In the movie full metal jacket the M1 carbine was mentioned, when cowboy was negotiating the price of the hooker with her ARVN pimp, he said something like he had new M1, s that had been shot once and only dropped once. Poking his finger at the ARVN, s conscription troops courage.
