12" free float rifle length on a 11.5" barrel
I've ordered a midwest industries 12" ssk to put on my 11.5" sbr. Does anyone have any experience putting a longer rail on a short barrel with standard flash hider? Worst case I see is I'll have to put a linear comp on it like the troy claymore. But was wondering if it would run okay if the rail went over the flash hider.
Also from what I've researched the rail is actually 12.5" long.

Hmm...with the standard A2 I don't think you'll have a lot of issues in the short term because it's a flash hider, not a comp, so most of the gas is still exiting forward. If you had a regular comp on it like a battlecomp I could see it causing issues because you'd have a lot of hoy gasses being directed at the inside of your rail. Most rails are fairly thin and a comp could actually chew through the aluminum with the gas and pressure. I'd say you'll probably still want to add something like a claymore or pig as long as it will fit inside the rail.

Re: 12
Avoiding a comp is indeed a good idea:

I'd actually be reluctant to extend a rail over a flash hider; there's a lot of hot gas under a lot of pressure coming out the end of a short barrel. But that's nothing but conjecture on my part.

Also was thinking in my head that the handguard would work as somewhat of a heat shield and keep me from burning myself if te while barrel was covered. Sent from somewhere over yonder.

Yeah....they specifically engineered that rail to have a comp nested in it.

Just for grins, I put together a 10.5" barrel on an upper with a 12" guntec FF quad rail and their Cone flash hider ...gaston_kalash wrote:I've ordered a midwest industries 12" ssk to put on my 11.5" sbr. Here's what it looks like ... I tried it with other slim handguards... but they didn't accept the cone ... It was just a smidge too large to fit under the handguard ...

Lol I ordered the rail from aim surplus and there was a mix up they said it was actually a m-lok rail and not a keymod and they gave me a discount for the mix up if I accepted the rail I said sure and also ordered a troy claymore. I thought I had messed up but turned out pretty good with the discount they gave me. Aim surplus rocks.

As soon as I saw the question I though of that very example.Frailer wrote:Avoiding a comp is indeed a good idea:

There are criminals among us who are both homicidal and incorrigible. Their parents took a shot at civilizing them and failed. Their school teachers took a shot at them and failed. The odds are overwhelming that government welfare programs and penal institutions took a shot at them and failed. If it ever becomes your turn to take a shot at them, don’t fail.

Re: 12" free float rifle length on a 11.5" barrel
Well they messed up my order again now I don't even have to mess with the claymore I am now getting a troy sdmr 11" keymod rail. Should work perfect on my 11.5" bcm upper. Owe and they thru in a t-shirt and give me a killer price on it to make everything "right". I gotta say all the trouble they have given me over this one order I am still pleased with them and it all worked out to my benefit in the end because I really don't like comps like the claymore and now can just use my standard flash hider.
