NEED INFO --STOEGER OVER UNDER WONT OPEN

Post by Nolan » Mon Feb 24, 2014 8:30 am

A guy I work with has a over/under stoeger 12 gauge that is stuck closed. He wasnt sure if firing pins were working so he stuck a piece of thin cardboard material in and closed it--now it wont open--my son suggested soaking it in solvent to disolve the paper. I now have the gun and ready to try to fix it. Anyone had this problem before??

Soak it as your son suggested.
Be prepared to also have a loose gun, as the fit of the lug was compressed.

Over/under and Side by side are fitted with several style of lugs and latches.

Some have a wear adjustment , some have to have a bigger hinge pin installed or the lug surface built up.

When heavy shells or a lot of shells are fired it stress the lug bearing/hinge pin surface .

This leads to loose fitting.
The only way to tell is get the cardboard out and see if the gun is loose and if there is a gap between chamber mouth and the standing breech.
If there is ....ooops , if not, shoot the gun.

Your son sounds pretty smart...even the shade tree gunsmith agrees with him, LOL

The cardboard could have caused the "wear" but maybe not.
It just depends on who made shotgun for Stoger.

Undo the forearm latch, and remove forearm, this will relieve tension on the pivot pin.
Now break open the action, it should open.
