Lottery winner still on food stamps

Post by ssracer » Wed Mar 07, 2012 9:47 pm

http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/sideshow/mi ... 51693.html
People love stories about someone winning the lottery and then giving the money away. They're less likely to feel fondly about Amanda Clayton, who won $1 million in the Michigan State Lottery but is still collecting food stamps.
"I thought that they would cut me off, but since they didn't, I thought maybe it was OK because I'm not working," Clayton, 24, told Local 4 news in Detroit.

Back in December, a woman in Washington State fell under scrutiny when it was revealed she was receiving state economic benefits even though she lives in a $1 million waterfront home on Lake Washington.

Clayton, who says she owns two homes and a new car, receives $200 a month in food assistance from the state-issued Michigan Bridge Card, which is meant to benefit lower-income residents in the nation's eigth most economically depressed state.

Twenty-five percent of Michigan's residents receive some form of food assistance from the state. The state's unemployment rate is 9.3 percent, more than a full point above the national average, but has dropped from a 10.4 percent peak in August.

And Clayton isn't embarrassed about living off the state even though she now finds herself in the nation's top tax bracket. "I mean I kinda do," Clayton told Local 4 when asked if she had a "right" to the government welfare.

She certainly doesn't the fit the mold of other lottery winners we have told you about here at the Sideshow, including the number of repeat winners of the Georgia State Lottery, many of whom chose to donate their initial winnings to charity or family members in need.

Clayton downplayed her wealth, saying she took the $1 million in a lump sump, which meant about half immediately went to taxes. "I feel that it's OK because I mean, I have no income and I have bills to pay," she said. "I have two houses."

Her story has already caught attention locally, where state Republican Rep. Dale Zorn has sponsored a bill preventing individuals like Clayton from taking state financial assistance.

"Public assistance should be given to those who are in need of public assistance, not those who have found riches," Zorn told Local 4. The bill, which has already passed the state House and has a sister bill in the Senate, would require the state to cross check the names of lottery winners over $1,000 to see if they are also receiving state financial benefits.
Government welfare living mentality at its finest.....completely disgusting....

I can't believe that a law is even needed to stop this shit. It's ridiculous that the woman is accepting the food stamps and it's even more ridiculous that the .gov can't even put an immediate stop to it.

This^^^^^^

Our government needs to study their history.....
A quote by Grover Cleveland I find appropriate

And yet I feel obliged to withhold my approval of the plan as proposed by this bill, to indulge a benevolent and charitable sentiment through the appropriation of public funds for that purpose.

I can find no warrant for such an appropriation in the Constitution, and I do not believe that the power and duty of the general government ought to be extended to the relief of individual suffering which is in no manner properly related to the public service or benefit. A prevalent tendency to disregard the limited mission of this power and duty should, I think, be steadfastly resisted, to the end that the lesson should be constantly enforced that, though the people support the government, the government should not support the people.

The friendliness and charity of our countrymen can always be relied upon to relieve their fellow citizens in misfortune. This has been repeatedly and quite lately demonstrated. Federal aid in such cases encourages the expectation of paternal care on the part of the government and weakens the sturdiness of our national character, while it prevents the indulgence among our people of that kindly sentiment and conduct which strengthens the bonds of a common brotherhood.

It is within my personal knowledge that individual aid has, to some extent, already been extended to the sufferers mentioned in this bill. The failure of the proposed appropriation of $10,000 additional, to meet their remaining wants, will not necessarily result in continued distress if the emergency is fully made known to the people of the country.

Exactly she will be broke in a year and have very little to show for it. I remember watching a documentary years ago about a homeless guy they gave 100k to just to see how he would handle it, at first he was grateful and bought food and a place to live, then a new truck then tvs clothes, random shit, bought some crack whore a new car, and within 5 months he was broke, soon after he was kicked out of his apt for non payment. When they left him all he had left was his truck and a few hundred bucks he was goin to buy drugs with

Food stamps should be run like wic. Only certain foods and only so much of each per month. I have no stats to back this up but I'd bet my left nut that 95% of food stamp recipients are over weight.

Very good point, she recievesd food stamps but hasd enough disposable income to buy lotto tickets....and we all know its never the person that just buys 1 ticket that wins, typical winners are hard core lotto players, she has probably spent the equivalent of her winnings on tickets over the last how ever many years.

Yea i dont understand it, if im right i think that as long as its "food" food stamps will pay for it.....so that means theoretically someone on food stamps could go buy a pallet of twinkies for the month and nothing else. Where as with wic you are limited to 'healthy" foods like bread, milk, cheese, cereal, etc. YOu actually get a balanced diet with wic, with food stamps you can get whatever you want for the most part.

I used to work at meijer around the time the EBT (foodstamp) cards came out, they have suprisingly very little limitations on them as to what you can buy. Of course no alcohol, candy and some other snack style foods could not be bought on them but most of my customers that would check out with them were buying top dollar cuts of meat, no generic foods, and would then produce a stack of $100 bills to pay for whatever their EBT wouldnt cover........

So? Are poor ppl not supposed to eat good steaks? And so what if they have a stack of hundreds? Does that immediately mean they are drug dealers or that they're super wealthy? I've known plenty of ppl that have ebt cards and many times they don't have bank Accts, so all of their money is kept In cash only.

If they are paying for them then yes let them buy the best steaks. But if they are living off .gov and playing the hell out of the system then they need to live more within their means. My favorite cut is the tenderloin but I sure as hell am not going to take money from taxpayers just to go buy it..
