What the issue with the box? Brand? The way it's wired?
There are criminals among us who are both homicidal and incorrigible. Their parents took a shot at civilizing them and failed. Their school teachers took a shot at them and failed. The odds are overwhelming that government welfare programs and penal institutions took a shot at them and failed. If it ever becomes your turn to take a shot at them, don’t fail.

It's a Federal Pacific panel. Which inspectors HIGHLY frown upon, like fail frown. So, I'd rather get it replaced now than later.

Gunsmokin, I'm checking your PM now.

Ouch!

http://www.angieslist.com/articles/are- ... s-safe.htm
Multiple tests done on the breakers since the 1980s have proven that one in four Stab-Lok breakers are defective and will not properly trip off. Unfortunately, when the testing began in the early 1980s, a New Jersey court later ruled that FPE committed testing fraud and a cover-up, labeling the breakers as meeting the standards set by the UL when in reality, they were defective.

In 1983, the Consumer Product Safety Commission closed its two-year investigation and felt it impossible to create a product recall at the time because of budget issues, even as Federal Pacific panels and breakers continued to be installed in millions of homes that to this day still run the risk of an electrical fire. An estimated 2,800 fires each year directly result from Federal Pacific panel breaker malfunction. Federal Pacific Electric has been out of business for many years, but the danger and damage caused by their negligence continues.
It must be true if it's on the internet.

The electrician who I just talked to..... he said he's seen 4 housefires in 6 months over this panel.

IN FACT:

We had a bird go through our attic fan. In its death throws it fell on the electrical box thingy knocking the cover off up there. We woke up at 4 am to horrid noise coming from the fan. It threw the bearing out AND sparks were flying in the attic. The breaker NEVER tripped. The electrician said this is the reason the fires start. Which I believe.

Must replace.

Get a Square D home line panel.

Reasonably priced and dependable.

All attic fans should be fused locally to prevent the issue with the breaker.

This. $100 in parts and probably $400 or $600 for electrician to do a panel swap. Depends on number of circuits and how fast he works

I'll also add on Square D with a second choice of Siemens. Do not let them put a Murray panel in your home. Crapola!!

Square D is the brand name

Home Line is the model of the panel you want

They come in 30 and 40 spaces in the 200 amp panels

30 or 40 space meaning it will hold either 30 or 40 single pole breakers

It will probably cost more than $100 in materials if you do it right (ie pull permits and get it inspected). Most breakers in a house have to be afci or gfci. Those breakers are much more expensive than normal breakers. If you aren't going the legal route, then you get what you get. By the way, I am a licensed master electrician.

Why must you leave comments so easily taken out of context? Sometimes, you make it far too easy.....
