Bee Keeping

Post by scorpionmain » Mon Apr 23, 2012 1:53 pm

Some pics of my first bee hive & me installing them.

Image
This is the way I received them, 3lbs of bees through the US postal service from Walter T. Kelley Co.

Getting the hive ready

Here is a pic of the queen in her own little cage.
Notice how the other bees flock to her.

Image
Plugged the front entrance with grass until they get used to their new home.

One little bee hanging out on the hive.

This is my first attempt at it. Hopefully it goes well. I will try to keep this thread updated.

I feel sorry for the little bee :(

;) Cool thing man! I used to work in a commercial bumble bee breeding centre. We used bees as surrogate workers for the bumble bee queens.

Well, it depends on how well they do this summer.
I want them to have enough stores to get them through the winter. Which I believe would be one super (about 2 gallons of honey).
If they can exceed in filling that, I will rob them.

My son does that and does very well. Might get into it if I move there.

You could keep bees in the city.
I have seen people do it in huge cities like New York and DC.

Well, I went in today and removed the transport cage and replaced frames.
Took a peek to see if I could find the queen.
Never saw her but there was a lot of traffic over and in the queen cage.
Brushed some bees off of the shipping cage and shut the hive back up.
By the time I left the area most of the bees that I couldn't get out of the shipping cage had already rejoined the hive.

They had removed the grass that I plugged the front entrance with and were flying around freely.

I would guess about $250-300, but cost really doesn't matter to me. It's the pleasure of learning how to do something new and be productive that is priceless to me.
I may be able to turn a profit down the road, but right now it is just something to do.

That's how I would view it. It's something I think I would really enjoy... maybe I could try to get something like this going while I'm in college. I am going to be studying biology/ecology, after all.

Above is a link to the Walter T. Kelley Company and Dadant.
You can find everything you need to get started there.

I bought my hives and frames as un-assembled pieces and put them together over the winter.

Snuck a peek into the hive today to see what is going on & grabbed some pics to study on.

Put the hive on cinder blocks instead of the pallet.
