Re: Bee Keeping

A lot of the old timers threw in the towel after the importation of the Varro Destructor Mite was introduced from Africa. Beekeeping became harder than just keeping some bees in a box. I think we are turning a corner on that pest now. New ways to defend against it.
It was my largest obstacle to overcome.

Thanks and they are doing great.
Up to 14 hives right now. Honey production this year has been my highest.
I can't keep up with the demand with my buyers. It flies off of the shelf. Practically selling itself at $12 per pint.
I began selling bees this year. Starter hives called nucs for $150 each.
It has been fun.

Oh i am so glad to see you in this thread again. Bee keeping is on my retirement list when the time comes.

Your honey is beautiful! What are the flowers they draw nectar from in your area?

Hopefully you have sourwood trees up there. My parents' neighbor has won gold several years at Apimondia with sourwood

I would have bees if we weren't surrounded by farms saturated in pesticides

Glad production is good for you. Nectar flow has been low in Ga for a couple of years

Thanks.
My biggest nectar source in the spring is the trees that are so abundant here in the South Eastern part of the state. Mostly Tulip Popular.
Then Clover in the summer and Golden Rod in the fall.
