need tires?? defiinitely check on Ebay

Post by BK Meyers » Sun Oct 12, 2014 6:48 pm

I've been shopping for tires for my wifes car. The size is 235/55/17. The current tires are a directional tread and for the new set I want to go to a "standard" type tread that will allow the tires to be rotated into any position on the car.

Went to the local tires stores and prices ranged from $670-$700 for the set of 4. Was able to go to Walmart over the wknd and found a set with good specs for $580.

Decided to go on Ebay and look for complete sets of wheels and tires. No luck. Then decided to try looking for just tires.

WOW. I found the set of Cooper Zeon RS3-A tires on Ebay (thru the seller DiscountTireDirect) for just $424 a set, and then an instant $100 off thru a supplied discount code. On top of that Cooper has a $60 rebate with these tires (in the form of a Visa gift card.

These same tires were priced to me locally for $682.40 before the gift card deal, so $622.40.

After the purchase, instant discount, Visa rebate card and local mount and balance I'll be in for less than $350 for the entire set!!!

Very glad that I decided to check other sources.

Don't mean to rain on someone's parade but beware of counterfeits on e-bay.

The odds are overwhelming that government welfare programs and penal institutions took a shot at them and failed. If it ever becomes your turn to take a shot at them, don’t fail.

A lot of the tires sold on eBay are stock that's been sitting in warehouses and then sold to a grey vendor. Most often than not, your buying a tire that was molded years earlier and might not be as safe as a new tire from a local dealer. This has been my experience. YMMV

This happened to us. The Good Years we received had a fair amount of storage wear (flat spots) and looked like crap.
Plus the fact that there is no implied warranty for local service and some dealers wont mount tires brought in off the street and some do but charge a premium for mount and balance with no warranty waiver to be signed and this ends up making the savings not worth it.

At least with motorcycle tires they say the compound starts to get brittle over time with storage.

Discount Tire and Tirerack.com, the only places I have bought tires from for the last 20 years. I was really happy when I saw Discount Tire had opened stores here in Louisville.

Doing pricing for tires now. With Tirerack.com, their prices are lower but by the time you pay to mount and balance its only a $35 difference in over all price. Plus I find their warranty shitty and their return policy absurd;
If you find an error with your order or find you need to return or exchange an item, please call customer service at 888-981-3953 and we will help find a quick and easy resolution for you. Customer service will provide you with a return authorization number and answer any questions regarding the product return/exchange procedure.

Please follow the return check list to ensure that no shipping damage will occur.

Manufacturer's Warranties

Merchandise covered by a manufacturer's warranty is sold with the warranty by the manufacturer extended to the purchaser. We will be happy to assist in obtaining fulfillment of a manufacturer's warranty. Specific tire information is available on each tire model’s product page via a “Warranty” link. Find your tire by brand here.

Other than applicable manufacturers' warranties, there are no warranties, express or implied, including any warranty of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose.

Return for Refund

We will accept returns within 30 days of delivery.

Only unused product that has not been driven on is eligible for return.

Credit amount will be calculated as follows:

TIRES: Credit less all freight charges incurred.

WHEELS: Credit less all freight charges incurred. Wheels cannot have had tires mounted; please test fit wheels prior to mounting tires.

WHEEL & TIRE PACKAGE: Credit less $60 labor charge for dismount and less all freight charges incurred.

SPECIAL ORDER ITEMS: Special order items are not returnable.

Orders shipped via Federal Express or UPS are charged freight both ways on refused shipments.

Credits will be issued to the credit card used on the order. If payment received was cash or check, we will refund by check to the billing address.

Shipping and Damage Claims

If your shipment has arrived with a damaged or incorrect item, please contact Tire Rack's customer service department at 888-981-3953. We will report the damage to the shipper and arrange for replacement or exchange. Damaged merchandise must be completely repackaged in the original packing and we will arrange for the return.

Return Check List

TIRES ONLY
Call Customer Service at 888-981-3953 for a Return Authorization Number.
Original strapping should be completely intact. (If not, ship tires individually. Do not tape together.)
Each tire (even when strapped to another tire) should be clearly labeled with your return address and Tire Rack's address.
Packing slip with Return Authorization Number should be taped securely on tire.
WHEELS ONLY Call Customer Service at 888-981-3953 for a Return Authorization Number and packaging instructions.
Review Packaging Instructions
TIRE AND WHEEL PACKAGES Call Customer Service at 888-981-3953 for a Return Authorization Number and packaging instructions.

Your comments are important. Please tell us why you are returning the merchandise.

I like knowing that when I buy local I get a warranty from the place I buy from and not having to pay shipping to return.

same things I found about tirerack.
I found that if you talk to some of the tire places they can generally give you a discount. I always have gotten one. Need to buy two more tires for the mustang, it seems to help to stay out of the gas though.

That is what I am seeing now but I won't.

Discount tire direct are good people. They didnt have the tires I ordered in stock and they were not sure when the supplier would have another production run. They called me and offered a more expensive tire same money as the ones I ordered. Saved me over 250 vs buying local. I have a good local company that will Mount and balance a set for 60.

Tires arrived on Friday as scheduled. No visible issues, all tires the correct size, etc. Had them mounted this morning at the Walmart in Radcliff. Car drives great.

As for right now I have approx. $365 in a set of 4 tires, mounted and balanced, and still need to send in the rebate form for the $60 card.

So after purchase, mount/balance and rebate I'll be in for just over $300 for a brand new set of 4 tires in 235/55/17!!!! The same set that was priced to me locally for $680

Saved enough to pay for the tires I need for my Ford Focus. Was going to wait on buying those for a few more weeks but the wet weather traction on the current set is not good, so probably headed back to Walmart in the a.m. with the Focus.
