Any experience with reverse - mow lawn mowers?
Curious if these are worth the extra two hundred dollars vs the ones that can't mow in reverse. My yard is only about 3/4 of an acre. If it's worth it I don't mind dropping the extra money on one.

Which mowers are you comparing? Do both have hydrostatic transmissions?

My Craftsman mower cuts in reverse as well. All I have to do is pull the hydrostatic tranny lever from forward to reverse, the deck never shuts off unless I hit the button to disengage the deck PTO solenoid.

I can stand next to my old deere and start it, put it in foreword or reverse and turn on the deck w/o even getting on it.

Actually looking at a few. A Cub Cadet LTX 1040, Deere DT105 and a Husqvarna and a couple of Troy Bilts. My yard is pretty flat with few places I'd even need to go in reverse. I believe that all but the low end TB have hydrostatic trannies.Marcus wrote:Which mowers are you comparing? Do both have hydrostatic transmissions?
Had a Murray for years until someone stole it.

My mom has a newer Cub that has that no reverse garbage...it sucks....
Easy enough to bypass I guess:......either buy on that mows in reverse or plan on altering

i've got a late 90's WHITE and it had the reverse cut out. I just disconnected it. Since you are flat you should be good on all choices. i was steered away from the HD/Lowes Johne Deere tractors due to weak transmissions. I was told be Deere reps that they aren't durable enough to withstand the hill i live on. they said i'd wear one out in a hurry. I've had the White for over ten years without issues. White is an MTD product in case you are curious

Going to go back and check again but it looks like it's just a simple contact switch on most of them. If that's the case then a bit of electrical tape is all that's needed to bypass it, no real modifications necessary.
mtchbrian, my yard looks like a sheet of plywood compared to yours. My biggest "obstacle" is the little ditch that runs alongside the road. The Troy Bilts are MTD products as well and so far I'm favoring them over the others since they are both just basic, no frills units. I don't really need much.

I need to fence in the yard and buy some goats to manage my grass. It would save me a lot of headache and time. then again the wife would have her garden destroyed by them. guess the mower and i will be together for a while...lol. I just need either a cup holder for my beer, or a beer hat for riding around.rustynuts wrote:Going to go back and check again but it looks like it's just a simple contact switch on most of them. This thread turned gay. I was following everything until you all started talking about trannies. Weird.

Did anyone else make that jump from 'transmission' to 'transsexual'?

yup just disconnect the safety wire.. I left the safety on the seat, it makes it easy when you are done mowing just jump off the mower shuts off all by itself. haha
