Glock 17 vs 34 for comp use
So my wife surprised me last night and is letting me get a new gun for competition use... Primarily steel shoots. I don't have a huge budget so I've narrowed my options to a glock 17 or 34 because I can get them for a good price through the blue label program. For those of you with experience shooting both, are there enough advantages of the 34 over the 17 to justify the extra cost? The only other gun I've really been Looking hard at is a CZ 75b. I've got around $500 to start out.... Wife said I could spend a little more though if I wanted the 34

Re: Glock 17 vs 34 for comp use
For comp use I'd say the longer barrel and sight radius of the 34 would be preferable

34 the long sight radius helps allot. I have noticed allot of people moving to the CZ over the glock over the last 2 years. I guess CZ vs glock I would pick the one that feels better in your hand better.

Out of all the pistol options, I wonder why the CZ? Definitely not knocking them, I loved the one I had. Just seems like there are a lot more "mainstream" brands people would think of before CZ.Dustin wrote:34 the long sight radius helps allot. I would go for an HK P30L. But that's me .Niceguy wrote:Out of all the pistol options, I wonder why the CZ? Definitely not knocking them, I loved the one I had. Of course there's always the Beretta PX4 series which IMHO one of the most overlooked guns out.
There are criminals among us who are both homicidal and incorrigible. Their parents took a shot at civilizing them and failed. Their school teachers took a shot at them and failed. The odds are overwhelming that government welfare programs and penal institutions took a shot at them and failed. If it ever becomes your turn to take a shot at them, don’t fail.

I got rid of my 17 and picked up a 34 to shoot. I like the sight radius and feel of a bigger gun. 17 just never felt great to me.

Cz is value for the dollar. I love the feel of themy and how they shoot. I'm not a huge family of the XD series. Not knocking them, they're just not my cup of tea. Gotta find something in that $500 ballpark! Glock and cz seem to be my favorite 2 there.

M&P and used VP9 or PPQ are a few in that range also. M&P's seem to be super cheap in the new and used market for the last year or two also. There are things I like and dislike about the G17, G34, VP9, PPQ, M&P, CZ75 (I have or had them all in the last couple years) that are all in that range. No real perfect pistol in my opinion. I shoot all okay, Glocks are definitely my worst though. Not an XD fan either.
Ammo is HUGE factor over the cost of the gun. The gun really is a drop in the bucket compared to the ammo, especially if you're competing with it.

Re: Glock 17 vs 34 for comp use
I would love to get a VP9 or P30 but the VP9 seems to be hovering just out of reach and the P30 is way out there lol... I've got a P30SK as my carry gun and could not be happier with it and I would love to stick to a similar platform as my comp gun but I don't think its gonna happen

Re: Glock 17 vs 34 for comp use
VP9 probably has the nicest out of the box trigger on a striker fired gun that I've ever tried. That was going to be my next purchase until that deal on the G17 popped up.
Re: Glock 17 vs 34 for comp use
That is the one I have. Mags are sort of pricey though.Niceguy wrote:I agree...Very nice! I'll get another one. The one with nightsights and extra mag.
PPQ had the best trigger out of the box I have felt.

I honestly couldn't tell a difference between the VP9 and PPQ if I closed my eyes. I liked the sights better on the PPQ it seemed like. I was slightly more accurate with it for whatever reason. They both are great pistols.

I would go 34 I Guess but I am not a fan of the full size grip. But I don't have the largest hands either. My chopped 17 is a great all around gun

Re: Glock 17 vs 34 for comp use
alright I shot the 34 and 17 yesterday and basically I shoot them both the same lol... I think I'm going to end up going with the 17 as much as I WANT to go with the 34. I'll use the money I save and get new sights or holster or somethin

Picked up a Gen 4 17 and am happy with it for now. If I find that I really enjoy comp shooting and do a halfway decent job at it, I'll probably sell the setup and get an h&k
