WTT/WTB S&W 340PD or M&P 340

Looking to purchase or trade to a Smith and Wesson 340PD. Needs to be new or like new.

I haven't. I know it's nasty with .357 rounds, but I am looking for the light weight aspect of the gun. I have read its like getting hit in the hand with a baseball bat. I have a model 60 and it's more weight than I want to pack in the summer. I will shoot .38's at the range and carry .357 for self defense. I purchased a 3'' 1911 and it's an awesome gun, but I don't carry it. I like the 60 better & want a lighter hammerless J frame for the summer months.

I have a boatload of J-frames, but if I ever come across a no-lock 342 at a remotely reasonable price it *will* be mine.

It's a great carry gun. I used to own one until it locked up on me while shooting it twice. The snappiness combined with the light weight was pulling the billets out of the casing in the cylinder. Happened several times.

LOL I have read there were some issues with the 'lock' versions and they now make a no-lock model.

That M&P 340 is sweet! The grips really give it a great look! Isn't the difference is a stainless cylinder and 2 ounces?
That is still very light.

In the hand the weight difference is not noticeable. I like the steel cylinder better anyways. The grips are aftermarket by Craig Spegal. Great grips if you can find any.

Thanks for sharing, those grips are sharp! I will add or M&P 340 to the title.

I but ugly the gun years ago online. I don't remember where but they can vary greatly in used asking prices from $500-$800. The grips are usually special order from Craig himself or look up j frame Spegal grips on gunbroker.

Another nice point is the 340/360 has a big dot night sight. I love this revolver!

It made be laugh that your autocorrect changed "bought" to "but ugly"! LOL I guess you have used that word combo from time to time. I have seen a few M&P's online and have been researching today. I looked at the Spegal website and might contact Craig when I pick up a 340. The night sight dot looks easier to get on target versus the fiber on the PD. I have learned a lot today thanks to everyones great input.

Front sight, rear groove and the gun itself are all dark and at dusk it all looks like one big shadow. First thing I've found that I didn't like about it. I've only had it for 2 weeks maybe though.

What's the difference between the 342 compared to the 442/642? Is the 340 and 640 just the exposed hammer or not?

They are all the "hammerless" Centennial frame style.

The 340 has a scandium/aluminum alloy frame and a titanium cylinder, in 357 magnum.
The 342 is the same, in 38 Special only
The 442/642 are 38 Special, with aluminum frames and steel cylinders
The 640 is all stainless steel; they used to be 38s, but they're now 357s

They are integral. A good gunsmith can fit a new front sight, but it probably won't be cheap.
