Both will work if you can get close within 100 yards. Is this one of the companies that use gen 3 or better night vision?
If you may be using one of the wicked lights you will be in the 100 yard realm. In the dark, I would feel better with a larger diameter projectile for tissue damage and 2 hole leakage. Entrance and exit, both pumping life from the beasty. There are some nice 223 projectiles made for such occasions. The quick second shot and familiarity of the weapon in the dark may be another option. Either way it should be a real hoot. Be safe and have a wonderful time. The smaller "footballs" piglets are great for eating. Probably better than turkey for Thanksgiving! Geno

Can't speak a lot from personal experience, but I have family in Tx that hog hunt on the regular. My cousins wife uses a 243 on regular basis and effectively kills pigs. They r such an issue there that they often don't even look for them after they shoot them.

Personally, I'd want the biggest caliber I owned....it may not be needed, but it'd be fun to put large holes in piggies.

Have fun... I'm jealous

Night vision mount to a scope base .
Would only recommend a gen 3/4 scope.
My scope is limited to shotgun range.
You can get a spot light that mounts on scopes.

Since you are limited to coyotes at night in KY , my experence is with shotgun mounts.

You can never be under gunned with hogs.

My father hunts them with a .44 mag carbine.
His buddy uses a SKS

Seriously, a 223 will take a hog as well. I would be packing an AR and taking multiple shots if laws allowed it there.

My preferred reasonable hog set up would be a 14.5" - 16" barreled AR with an IR laser and a helmet-mounted PVS-14. Ammo would be 70gr Barnes TSX loadings from either Silver State Armory or ASYM, without question.

Between your given options? Whatever you can most readily find a Barnes TSX or TTSX loaded for would be my caliber choice, with the brightest, farthest throwing rifle mounted light I could find covered with a red or green filter.

LOTS of good hog hunting info can be found here: http://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php ... erformance

Fuck that. He let it suffer while he filmed it. Waited a solid minute for the second spear. One and done. End it quick.
A lot of hunts end up with similar out comes even with a gun. Unless you get your target in a good kill spot it will run and bleed out.
Im sure the pork chop or bacon you had for breakfast made a lot more noise for a longer period of time. I been to a few slaughter houses and that hog was a pretty humane kill.
As for wild pigs, most people who have problems with them could care less if they suffer. They destroy a lot of land in a short period of time.

I'd go 20" bull barrel with 1:7 twist to reach out some.

A lot depends on what is legal where you hunting
If a .223 is legal I would use heaviest bullet 69/70 grain.
And a hog will squeal at the lightest touch, so don't worry with that , Coach.

And I know a thing about slaughterhouses myself.

Consider a hog to be a varmint, that you can eat.
They are distructive.
Which KY allowed NV with rifles for night hunting them., but alias they do not.

Are you going on a wild boar hunt on a game farm?
Or on a feral hog hunt?

If you are wild boar I would say a .223 would just piss a big boar off.

Ethical HOG killing......LOL

Where I grew up we did not have whitetail , we had pigs. By your teenage years you dont even use a gun anymore, you just let the dogs run them down, belly stick them with a big ass knife, and let the dogs maul them to death.

HUnting with knives and spears has grown popular for killing these things.

I am not talking about a feral hog but a wild boar, they are both swine but not the same animal.
Wild boar have a thick carapace and large tusks

A feral hog has a thinner carpace to none and 3/4 inch tusks.

Hahaha , really ??
That was a piglet , no way I would use a air rifle unless it was a large caliber.
Say a .50 custom on a 300 pounder.

I have seen .22 LR not even kill a large domestic hog shot right between the eyes. Bullet bounced off , my Father stuck it with a knife.
And a cash stunner not even stun a hog , right behind the ear.

We had wild Boar, I have no real experience with feral hogs though I suspect they are more alike then not. Even in Wild boar there are like 15 types though only a wildlife expert could tell them apart.
