There are criminals among us who are both homicidal and incorrigible. Their parents took a shot at civilizing them and failed. Their school teachers took a shot at them and failed. The odds are overwhelming that government welfare programs and penal institutions took a shot at them and failed. If it ever becomes your turn to take a shot at them, don’t fail.

Heard this earlier as well and seems to be conflicting stories as to what actually happened.

Seems to be the clearest as to what went on as they were the ones that originally reported the story

My wife's godmother is not in the best of health and no power is not doing any good.
Can't get in touch with her.
And one of her (and mine) uncles is missing.
Already lost a close family friend from the hurreracane that got Hatai a few years ago.

Christie orders odd-even gas rationing for some New Jersey counties

TRENTON, N.J. – If you're planning to line up for gas Saturday, better check your license plate first.
New Jersey is moving to an odd-even gas rationing system in 12 counties starting at noon.
Gov. Chris Christie ordered the odd-even system late Friday.
He says it will help ease fuel shortages and extended lines for gasoline that have occurred since a superstorm decimated the coast this week.
Residents with license plates ending in an even number will be able to buy gas on even-numbered days and residents with plates ending in an odd number can make gas purchases on odd-numbered days.
The order is in effect for the counties of Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Hunterdon, Middlesex, Morris, Monmouth, Passaic, Somerset, Sussex, Union and Warren.

This whole situation is bad and only getting worse.
The politicians have been patting themselves on their back of a job well done, while they haven't even really started helping these people.
Way to early to be declaring victory.
The death toll is expected to climb hugely from what they are reporting.
They claim 19, talking about could be 200. With more occurring the longer this goes on.

I saw over 100 mentioned yesterday by the news as the official number.

Don't think it's laughing but more of a collective head shake.

Hope everyone is alright and you can get in touch with them.

Queens residents arm themselves in the post-storm blackout from looters

When night falls in the Rockaways, the hoods come out.
Ever since Sandy strafed the Queens peninsula and tore up the boardwalk, it’s become an often lawless place where cops are even scarcer than electrical power and food. Locals say they are arming themselves with guns, baseball bats, booby traps — even a bow and arrow — to defend against looters.
Thugs have been masquerading as Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) workers, knocking on doors in the dead of night. But locals say the real workers have been nowhere in sight, causing at least one elected official — who fears a descent into anarchy if help doesn’t arrive soon — to call for the city to investigate the utility.

You guys are not helping my panic attacks, here. I have two daughters in that God-awful mess and am worried sick. So far, they are both fine, for now. I fear the descent into anarchy. I haven't had as much training time with them as I have had with my son, who is fully capable of taking care of himself & his family.

Maybe the smart phone is their only way of contacting loved ones. People are doing away with landlines.

Makes me wonder if I should get one of those solar chargers for my cell phone.

Maybe not a solar unit, they are very, very slow to charge, but one of the high capacity chargers (i.e. 10-20,000 mah) would not be a bad idea. They can charge the phone multiple times, or can also be able to charge multiple devices (often at the same time...). I have a couple, and they both hold their charge for a good long time without losing any capacity.

I am giving thought to a solar unit to charge the other chargers in case of a prolonged emergency.

I also recently purchased an additional 3 of these chargers to send to the kids.
