The Republic dies with great applause from all sides somehow. The founding fathers would be ashamed.

Supreme Court leaves state assault weapons bans in place
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2016/06 ... tcmp=hpbt2
WASHINGTON – The Supreme Court has rejected challenges to assault weapons bans in Connecticut and New York, in the aftermath of the shooting attack on a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, that left 50 people dead.

The justices on Monday left in place a lower court ruling that upheld laws that were passed in response to another mass shooting involving a semi-automatic weapon, the elementary school attack in Newtown, Connecticut.

DEVELOPING: The first in a series of dueling gun control measures was defeated Monday evening in the first proposed legislation in the wake of the Orlando terror attack.

The first vote was on the amendment by Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, to enhance funding for an existing gun background check system which needed 60 votes to pass. The final vote tally was 53 to 47.

but there is any number of reasons that bill lost, look at it

Highlights:

The Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, 2016 provides FY2016 appropriations to the Department of Commerce, the Department of Justice (DOJ), science agencies, and several related agencies.

The bill funds agencies with a wide range of responsibilities for issues such as: addressing violent crime, drug trafficking, financial fraud, terrorism, espionage, and cybercrime; conducting the census; forecasting the weather; managing fisheries; exploring space; advancing science; providing legal services for the poor; enforcing employment discrimination laws; and overseeing patents, trademarks, and trade policy.

The bill increases overall FY2016 Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies funding above FY2015 levels, including increases for the Department of Commerce, DOJ, science programs, and Related Agencies.

Within the Department of Commerce budget, the bill includes:

increases for the Bureau of Industry and Security, the Bureau of the Census, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology; and
decreases for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and Departmental Management.
Within the DOJ budget, the bill includes:

increases for Legal Activities, the U.S. Marshals Service, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Federal Prison System, and Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS); and
decreases for the Office on Violence Against Women and Office of Justice Programs, including State and Local Law Enforcement Assistance.
For science programs, the bill increases funding for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and funds the National Science Foundation and the Office of Science and Technology Policy at or slightly below FY2015 levels.

The bill includes increases for the Legal Services Corporation and the Marine Mammal Commission, while funding the other related agencies included in the bill at the FY2015 level.

The bill includes provisions that restrict or prohibit the use of funds for:

the transfer of Guantanamo detainees or the construction of a new facility in the United States to house them;
the enforcement of certain restrictions on firearms; and
preventing states from implementing their own laws legalizing medical marijuana.

UPDATE: Grassley Amendment has failed by a 53-47 vote. Sen. Joe Donnelly (D-IN) joined Republicans, while Sens. Mark Kirk (R-IL) and Cory Gardner (R-CO) broke ranks to join Democrats.
UPDATE: Murphy Amendment to expand background checks fails on a mostly party line 56-44 vote. Sen. Mark Kirk (R-IL) joined Democrats, while Sens. Joe Manchin (R-WV), Jon Tester (D-MT), and Heidi Heitkamp (D-SD) broke ranks and voted with the Republicans in opposition.
UPDATE: Feinstein’s no-fly, no-buy amendment that would bar people on terror watch lists from buying guns, despite the lack of due process of law goes down in a 53-47 vote.
UPDATE: Cornyn Amendment that would require law enforcement to be notified of a gun purchase from someone on a terror watch list fails 53-47. The amendment would also empower the attorney general to block that sale for up to three days pending a review.
UPDATE: All Amendments Fail To Pass

http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/r ... vote=00105
You may notice something you may not expect in the voting, it was the dems who for the most part voted it down. Remember these were Republican introduced compromise bills, apparently most of the Dems didn't like the fact that the 5th A (due process among other things) was being respected in the bills. The dems got baited and fell for it.
The other bills can be found by searching for the bill # where pretty much the same thing happened.

I think that was the one that was even backed by the NRA. Near party line vote to shoot it down.

Misdirected Hostility: Democratic Senator Says People Who Own AR-15s Are Buying Them 'To Do Bad Things'
http://townhall.com/tipsheet/mattvespa/ ... e-n2181918
The fact is, the AR-15, the gun that (Omar) Mateen used, that’s a weapon of war; it’s advertised as being able do technologically advances in killing people that previous weapons have been unable to do and somebody who is buying that kind of a weapon isn’t buying it for target shooting,” she said. “They’re not buying it to go out and hunt deer. You don’t need an AK-47 or an AR-15 to hunt deer. They’re buying it to do bad things and we need to recognize that and address it.”
