UCLA Students Condemn ‘White Feminism’ as Supremacist

by Tom Ciccotta30 Nov 2016225

The Intergroup Relations Program at UCLA held a dinner with students to address and discuss their concern that feminism has ties to white supremacy.

According to The Daily Bruin, the student newspaper of UCLA, students decried the lack of “intersectionality” in mainstream feminism. For the uninitiated, intersectional feminism is defined by a 1989 textbook incorporating the diverse plight of women across different demographic backgrounds.
The view that women experience oppression in varying configurations and in varying degrees of intensity. Cultural patterns of oppression are not only interrelated, but are bound together and influenced by the intersectional systems of society. Examples of this include race, gender, class, ability, and ethnicity.
The Daily Bruin spoke with several students who attended the event, including Celia Cody-Carrese, an intern with Intergroup Relations Program. She spoke specifically of her concerns that feminism has ties to white supremacy, arguing that the word “feminism” typically conjures up images of white women.
Cody-Carrese said the organizers chose white feminism as the topic of Wednesday’s event because they think feminism has traditional ties with white supremacies. The organizers wanted to give students the opportunity to discuss the topic and break the stigma.

Intergroup Relations leaders discussed how celebrities approach feminism. Some asked the group what the difference was between the empowerment messages in Taylor Swift’s vs. Beyonce’s music.

Some students said they thought Swift’s music does not have the same impact as Beyonce’s because of her privilege, even if her music has messages of empowerment. Conversation later spread into European patriarchy as an instrument of subjugation during the colonial era in world history.
Anna Yeakly, the director of the Intergroup Relations Program explained that white feminism was a topic that was chosen by the students themselves: “White feminism was a topic suggested by the students, based on their interest in discussing the issue of intersectionality that is often left out of conversations about feminism,” Yeakly said.

Cody-Carrese also claims that it’s the group’s intention to create a space on campus where students can discuss overlooked topics. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem that Cody-Carrese has any interest in promoting the discussion of conservative and libertarian topics, which are significantly overlooked at progressive west coast universities like UCLA.

Forever searching for something to be offended about

Victoria’s Secret Accused of Cultural Appropriation, Designing ‘Racist Lingerie’
http://www.breitbart.com/big-hollywood/ ... -lingerie/
Womenswear brand Victoria’s Secret has been accused of cultural appropriation and of designing “racist” lingerie by a lifestyle editor at Cosmopolitan magazine.

In an article, Helin Jung, executive lifestyle editor at the outlet, criticized what she called the “sexist, patriarchal, mostly white corporation” for its “brazen” perpetuation of “what is clearly cultural appropriation.”

Jung begins her critique by describing the Victoria’s Secret annual fashion show, which kicked off Wednesday in Paris.

“Models dressed in costumes fit for segments called ‘Dark Angel,’ ‘Secret Angel,’ and ‘Bright Night Angels’ stomped down the runway at the Grand Palais, showing off the sculpted results of their life’s work and ‘naturally’ enhanced hair,” Jung wrote.

After detailing the various designers, models, and entertainers showcased at the “multimillion-dollar televised panty parade,” Jung ominously warns, “But look closer and you’ll see that the golden glitter path is paved with unfortunate intentions.”

Jung’s biggest point of contention, apparently, is that while Victoria’s Secret’s appears to celebrate the world’s multicultural beauty through design and fashion, it is actually engaging in the “exploitation of these cultural references.”

“[D]on’t let yourself be hoodwinked by Victoria’s Secret’s brazen attempt to relabel what is clearly cultural appropriation by turning it into a celebration of ‘culture,'” Jung wrote. “The brand and its creative leads shamelessly cherry-picked imagery, breaking apart aesthetic references from wherever they wanted and stitching them back together again. They’re telling us it’s worldliness. It’s not; it’s a hack job.”

Jung rails against Chinese cultural appropriation, writing that “the emblems that stood out most were the ones that came from Asia — specifically China.”

But Jung also acknowledges that Nepalese jewelry designer Arpana Rayamajhi created most of the work for the segment.

Jung firmly rejects Victoria’s Secret for its seemingly sincere attempt at appreciating the world’s cultures.

“With its positive, pre-emptive spin about globalization and multiculturalism, Victoria’s Secret seems to have anticipated my response,” Jung wrote. “The brand is leading with the notion that we’re all members of the human race, therefore everything belongs to everyone.”

UPDATE: Cosmopolitan appears to have taken down the article, as the link leads to an error message. The article is still available in an archived link here.

Social media users who noticed the article ripped the fashion website for publishing the piece, which accused Victoria Secret of mass cultural appropriation for profit.

There are criminals among us who are both homicidal and incorrigible. Their parents took a shot at civilizing them and failed. Their school teachers took a shot at them and failed. The odds are overwhelming that government welfare programs and penal institutions took a shot at them and failed. If it ever becomes your turn to take a shot at them, don’t fail.

Who knew google was so sexist that we needed to be saved from it?
By Kieran Corcoran | 7:47 am, December 2, 2016

A technology company has vowed to fight online sexism by inserting images of women into Google results.

Semcon, a Swedish multinational, launched a web browser plug-in to change what gets displayed by the allegedly prejudiced search engine.

The “Re-Search” extension launches parallel results fields so that searches like “engineer” show female people in hard hats as well as men:

The company claim their extension can “make image search gender balanced” – and will help end the social evil of stereotyping.

Promo material for the product said: “With the internet, many of us hoped we would get access to a more diverse set of images of different professions, and there is no question that the non-stereotypical images are out there.

“The problem is that they don’t show up in the search results, unless you search for them specifically.

“If we can present images of professions in a more balanced way to begin with, maybe we can take a first step towards better role models, images and balanced representation.”

The company is keen to point out its own gender balance credentials too – highlighting its aim of having a 40% female staff by 2020, which it said is as important to the company as financial success.

Heat Street took the extension for a test drive – and unfortunately if Semcon want to outsmart Google’s viciously sexist algorithm they may have to try a little harder.

As the screenshot shows, all the extension does is spot when you search from a pre-defined list of terms, then kick up a new window that searches the same thing with the word “female” or “male” added to the end.

So, “banker” opens a window searching for “banker female”, and dancer a window for “male dancer”.

Disappointingly, the list remains very narrow.

Biased results pages for searches like “sex offender”, “internet troll” and “murderer” remain uncorrected – and true equality remains elusive.

Over the last eight years, we’ve delivered on that promise in many ways, both big and small — including, of course, providing health coverage to 20 million more Americans, and making health care more affordable for all Americans.

Straight from La la land
DICKERSON: “The Democratic Party is in a moment of questioning about its identity. You were reelected to lead the Democrats in the House. What do you tell Democrats who want a new direction and then, go to you, what are you going to do differently?”
PELOSI: “Well, I don’t think people want a new direction. Our values unify us and our values are about supporting America’s working families. That’s one that everyone is in agreement on. What we want is a better connection of our message to working families in our country, and that clearly in the election showed that that message wasn’t coming through. But we are united in terms of the security of our country, which is our first responsibility. To be smart and strong and not reckless in how we protect the American people, strong in how we protect our economy.”

Castro's reign in Cuba was marked by thousands of human rights violations. Property was seized by the government. Homosexuals were imprisoned. Castro's own family members fled the country for their own safety. Millions of Cubans decided to face shark-infested waters in an attempt to make it to Florida rather than live in their country under Castro. This man is a disgrace to human rights, and should not be honored or remembered with any kind of respect.

Satire or not? Now-a-days it's getting hard to tell.

Trump’s election stole my desire to look for a partner
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/sol ... d0452e374d
In August, I went on six dates in one week. I had decided that I was ready to look for a partner. Enough of this dating unavailable men a half-decade younger than me. They’d never seriously consider a relationship with me, my two children and our needy dog. No. I wanted to find an equal. A man who wouldn’t feel the need to step in and rescue me. I didn’t need rescuing.

But I knew deep down that was only partially true. I often felt the sort of loneliness that settled in my stomach, starting from a chaotic afternoon with my children, lasting well into the night when I pulled covers tight around my chin.

I’ve been on my own with my kids for most of the past decade. I have no idea what a supportive partner would even look like in my house. I imagined it as some sort of potluck: We’d both bring the things we have to offer and place them on the table. My ability to multitask and keep everyone’s schedules on track would sit next to his ability to fix cars, cook or read books in silly voices. Then we’d feast.

Of the six first dates I had in August, two men seemed promising. One of them met me at a brewery. We chatted happily through two beers. Finally I was out of a job interview mode I’d fallen into while sitting across from strangers. I relaxed. I laughed. And it wasn’t the laugh I did just because. It was real.

We dated for a few weeks before he admitted he wasn’t ready for something serious. Two days later, the other of those good dates called me out of the blue. We talked for a while, and I asked him to dinner. Things were falling into place. A feast was laid out on the table, and it looked delicious.

But two weeks later, the election happened. Once it was clear that Donald Trump would be president instead of Hillary Clinton, I felt sick to my stomach. I wanted to gather my children in bed with me and cling to them like we would if thunder and lightning were raging outside, with winds high enough that they power might go out. The world felt that precarious to me.

[How to survive the holidays while single or divorced]

My oldest came out of her room the next morning to show me the money the Tooth Fairy had left her. She’d unexpectedly had to have a tooth pulled, and so bravely went through it that I said, “Just think: You’ll always remember the day you got a tooth pulled with the day we elected our first female president.”

When I told her Trump had won, she protested: “But Mom. You said Hillary was going to win.”

“A lot of people thought the same thing,” I said. I hugged her, a little scared to send her to school, out into the big sky country of the red state where we live.

Twenty minutes later, at a stoplight on the way to drop off my 2-year-old daughter at day care, steam started creeping out from under the hood of my car. Fortunately my mechanic’s shop was nearby.

My radiator was cracked in two places, right at the top. “I really wouldn’t feel comfortable with you driving it,” one of the mechanics said. Luckily a new radiator could easily be obtained and installed that day. I thanked them.

I didn’t start crying until I had crossed the street to walk home. We had a few miles to go, so I carried my daughter. I didn’t mind carrying her; I still had that urge to cling to her and keep her close. It was cold that morning, but the sun started to warm us enough to remove our hats. Halfway home, my tears stopped, and my despair grew to appreciation.

[What if we thought of monogamy as a spectrum?]

I have the means to fix our car. I, on my own, can support my family. I not only have the strength to keep it together mentally and emotionally but I also have the strength to carry my daughter home. I have the strength to carry all of us.

That urge to cling to my family while keeping our foundation strong didn’t mesh well with continuing to date the man I’d been seeing. He also has a daughter. He, too, had been feeling a lot of the same emotions I was experiencing: hopelessness; fear; uncertainty about the future; panic over having to talk to my 9-year-old about anything that might come up at school, or what to do in the instance of sexual assault. But I couldn’t reach out to him anymore. He was too new, too unfamiliar.

My focus had to be on my community of friends that are my family. I need to fiercely love the people close to me instead of learning to love someone new. To reach out to others could weaken the bonds that hold my family together.

“I can’t,” I told him. “I just can’t.”

I’ve lost the desire to attempt the courtship phase. The future is uncertain. I am not the optimistic person I was on the morning of Nov. 8, wearing a T-shirt with “Nasty Woman” written inside a red heart. It makes me want to cry thinking of that. Of seeing my oldest in the shirt I bought her in Washington, D.C., that says “Future President.”

There is no room for dating in this place of grief. Dating means hope. I’ve lost that hope in seeing the words “President-elect Trump.”

And the day just keeps getting weirder

Sofia Vergara: US actress faces lawsuit 'from own embryos'
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-38252457
Modern Family star Sofia Vergara is being, in effect, sued by two frozen embryos she conceived with the partner she split from, US media report.

The embryos, named Emma and Isabella, are listed in Louisiana court documents obtained by the New York Post.

She and Nick Loeb separated in 2014 and he has already tried unsuccessfully to sue for the embryos' custody.

The new lawsuit argues that the embryos are being deprived of their inheritance from a trust by not being born.

The trust is reported to have been created for them in Louisiana, although the embryos are located in California.

Louisiana is considered a "pro-life" state and under its law a fertilised egg is seen as a "juridical person".

The Louisiana case names a trustee as plaintiff, but not Mr Loeb himself. The suit asks that the embryos be transferred to Mr Loeb so that they can be born and receive their inheritance.

Ms Vergara, 44, and Mr Loeb, a 41-year-old businessman, created the embryos at a California clinic through in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) in 2013.

A contract signed at the time is reported to have stipulated that neither partner could do anything with the embryos without the other's consent.

Ms Vergara, according the suit, is alleged to be refusing to allow them to be implanted in a surrogate mother.

Mr Loeb's legal team allege that both Ms Vergara and Mr Loeb went into the IVF process on the understanding that the embryos would be brought to term.
'Going to hell'

The IVF process initially produced several embryos, prompting the following text message exchange, according to the plaintiff's documents.

Mr Loeb: "Now what. You can't keep 4 frozen lives forever or kill them, we will go to hell."

Ms Vergara: "We r going to hell regardless".

Ms Vergara's lawyer, Fred Silberberg, told US weekly the case against his client would fail.

"That genetic material was created pursuant to a written agreement that required both parties' written consent to attempt to create a pregnancy."

Ms Vergara is now married to American actor, Joe Manganiello. She has a son by previous marriage.

The case has again thrown the spotlight in the United States on the issue of when a fertilised egg should be considered a human being.

In the state of Ohio, Republican lawmakers have approved a bill which would ban abortions once a heartbeat has been detected in an embryo.

The measure, which has yet to be signed into law by Governor John Kasich, could mean no abortions six weeks after conception.

It would be one of the strictest abortion laws in the US if approved.

Transgender Star Eligible for Male and Female Oscar Categories

Kelly Mantle, a transgender artist, is now the first person to be eligible for an Oscar in both male and female categories.

Mantle, born a male, plays a transgender prostitute in the Miguel Ali-directed comedy drama Confessions of a Womanizer.

While filing Academy Award submission forms, the film’s producers were faced with the question to place Mantle in either the male or female category. They settled on submitting Mantle’s name for consideration in both categories, The Wrap reports.

The Academy repeatedly agreed and said the transgender performer is eligible for nomination in both categories.

Confessions, which also stars C. Thomas Howell, Gary Busey, and Andrew Lawrence, premiered in March 2014 at the Cinequest Film Festival and follows a compulsive womanizer who becomes best friends with a transgender prostitute. It has won several awards.

Mantle has racked up more than 30 acting credits since 1999, the first being a guest appearance on the MTV show Undressed.

Mantle’s most high-profile role to date was as a contestant on the sixth season of RuPaul’s Drag Race.

Marxist Vegan Restaurant Closes After Customers No Longer Willing to Wait 40 Minutes for a Sandwich

By Emily Zanotti | 7:04 pm, December 8, 2016

A “Marxist” “collectivist” “worker-run” restaurant in Grand Rapids, Michigan, closed its doors this week after customers complained that they could no longer tolerate the bizarre hours, high prices and long lines.

The Garden Diner and Cafe—previously known as the Bartertown Diner—featured a vegan, vegetarian and raw food menu that had met with significant national acclaim. But the restaurant’s business model, which did not allow for bosses or managers, promised a “living wage” to all employees and a strong union, did not allow the restaurant to make enough profit to stay in business.

Worse still, while the food earned Bartertown a spot on VegNews’s “10 Hot New Vegan Restaurants” list, customers complained that it was almost impossible to get a meal at the diner.

People frequently noted on the restaurant’s Facebook page that they waited more than 40 minutes for a sandwich—and that’s when the diner was even open. Because the employees set the shop’s hours by group decision, the restaurant opened and closed at random times, leaving potential sandwich buyers totally confused.

It turns out, in a shocking revelation to the store’s management, that those Soviet bread lines were a bug, not a feature of Communism.

On Reddit, the restaurant’s frequent political statements produced fiery confrontations. Some Grand Rapids residents resented that Bartertown offered them a side of Che Guevara with every bahn mi and $2 taco. Customers also complained that the restaurants “equal pay, no tipping” scheme failed to reward exceptional service, pointing out on the message board that “you shouldn’t try running your business on political good will alone.”

Even Bartertown’s inclusive, progressive politics couldn’t please everyone in their community. When the diner offered a free meal to Grand Rapids police officers as a “thank you” for keeping their neighborhood safe, local socialists complained that the business was abrogating its core ideals by siding with fascists and supporting “nearly all-white police force in this era of police violence.”

So, in a no-win situation, and discovering first hand the troubles that have plagued Communism for more than a century, the restaurant was forced to close its doors. As one community member put it, they discovered that “you can’t make payroll and your bills with Facebook and Tumblr ‘likes.'”

The owner, for his part, is admitting his mistake. When asked what his next venture would be, he told MLive.com that he was “taking a vacation.”

How bourgeois.
