Long history of bad blood between those two.
There are criminals among us who are both homicidal and incorrigible. Their parents took a shot at civilizing them and failed. Their school teachers took a shot at them and failed. The odds are overwhelming that government welfare programs and penal institutions took a shot at them and failed. If it ever becomes your turn to take a shot at them, don’t fail.

For once the news media IDed the plane right, it is a Su-24. But the idiots still for the most part insist on calling it a fighter.

Nato allie shoots down Russian close air support jet.
Basically equivalent to an F-111. Fighter/Bomber- air to ground primarily. Not very agile. The Turks, I think, have over-stepped here. The Russians were pushing the envelope to get a reaction. The F-16's that took their plane down could have just as easily escorted them out of their air space. I don't trust the Turks(edit) as much, anymore. Back in the 80's/90's their government was basically a secular democracy. A trusted ally. The current President, Erdogan, is an Islamist with motives to move toward a more theocratic governing style. Plus, they hate the Kurds, who could hate the Kurds?!?WLJ wrote:For once the news media IDed the plane right, it is a Su-24. But the idiots still for the most part insist on calling it a fighter.

Anyone see Obama get dissed by everyone coming out of one of the meetings? He goes down a line of officials, attempting to shake hands, and every one of them passed to the dude walking to Obama's right. I'll try to find the video.

US confirms Turks warned Russia before shooting down jet
Posted at 15:39
A spokesman for the US-led coalition against Islamic State, Col Steve Warren says it can confirm that the Turks warned the Russian plane 10 times before shooting down the jet.
He said they were working to establish exactly where the plane was when it was shot down.

Syrian Turkmen brigade deputy commander Alpaslan Celik tells Reuters:
Both of the pilots were retrieved dead. Our comrades opened fire into the air and they died in the air."

Just saw something on the blaze about a Russian rescue helicopter being shot down possibly by Syrian Rebels with US supplied TOW missiles...only seen the one story so don't know how true it is

Anyone else hear Fred Thomson's voice in your head after hearing the news about the shootdown?

At least glad to see that our technology from 20 years ago can still take down Russian jets today.

Su-24s first flew in 1970 and entered service in 1974 with production shutting down in 1993. Don't know what kind of updates,if any, this particular one had had though.Toddstang wrote:At least glad to see that our technology from 20 years ago can still take down Russian jets today.

I thought they were all updated internally and used smart flares to deter heat seeking missiles?WLJ wrote:Su-24s first flew in 1970 and entered service in 1974 with production shutting down in 1993. Seen something about that on British Broadcasting earlier.

Re: Nato allie shoots down Russian close air support jet.
Didn't say they weren't, was just showing the Su-24 is no spring chicken. I have no doubt it was fully equipped to defense itself and should have been updated at least once I would think over the years, by what standard this particular one was I have no clue. It's a tit for tat game but still too much we don't about the engagement to say anything at this point. Was it shot down with AIMs (Air intercept Missiles) or guns? How alert was the Su-24 crew that they were about to be shot down? How much time did they have to react? And so on.Toddstang wrote:I thought they were all updated internally and used smart flares to deter heat seeking missiles?WLJ wrote:Su-24s first flew in 1970 and entered service in 1974 with production shutting down in 1993. The Su-34 is slowly replacing the Su-24 but it's an expensive, by Russia standards at least, MF, but capable as heck. And a mean looking SOB to boot.

We should have NEVER allowed countries like Turkey or any of the former Soviet states to join NATO.

Turkey has been a member of NATO since 1952Brother of Liberty wrote:We should have NEVER allowed countries like Turkey or any of the former Soviet states to join NATO.

I'd be curious to learn why you believe this.Brother of Liberty wrote:We should have NEVER allowed countries like Turkey or any of the former Soviet states to join NATO.
I have my own reasons for believing expanding into the former Soviet Union was ill-advised, but why the opposition to Turkey (and, by extension, Greece)?

I know what you were saying, you are spot on about them being ancient. I just expected more offensive/defensive power from the rebuilt Soviet kingdom.WLJ wrote:Didn't say they weren't, was just showing the Su-24 is no spring chicken.
