Im KI4RHH
Single best thing you could do is find your local club, KY4KY for most of ya. http://www.ky4ky.com/
Go to there meeting, talk to some of the folks who live radio and tell them you want to get involved. They tend to be the single largest help you could get, they will be able to help you with study guides, radio gear, administering the test, building antennas , setting up stations, they are your resource!
The best of all is they want you to get involved, they desire to help you!
I could list all sorts of stuff you may want to get or do , but in the end you will still have to go to them and tell them what you want to do, take the test, and get involved.
Starting out is cheap, for most of you a hand held will get you in to most local repeaters, and you can get them new as cheap as 35 bucks. That will provide local communications to and from repeaters as well as simplex or the ability to talk radio to radio.
HF units handle all coms beyond that , they tend to be more costly and require a general license or better. Not everyone needs a general license though there is no harm in getting it either, but if a group of say 10 guys had technician class licenses and 2 of them had general, they would be able to provide news and information to the others. Its just a question of how involved you want to get.
Its a prepper must IMO, for the cost there is no penalty and huge rewards.

For now, I'm just going to link up this thread. Lot of stuff already there and we can add more here as needed.

Check the 4th post. Might be a good starting point.

^ I looked for that topic to link but couldn't find it on my phone. Glad you found it . Here's a list of bands & frequencies & who broadcasts where. http://www.arrl.org/band-plan .
Here's a sdr(software defined radio) site you can listen to http://www.websdr.org/ . Sdr radio uses your computer to control the radio & there are several apps you can use on your phone
. Ham radio has always fascinated me . From weather faxes to rrty to sdr to sstv to cw (Morse code). I guess with the Internet age radio just dosent draw people like it once did
