Looking for a small .38 and happened to check one out at Shooters today. Anyone have one of these?
I like the size and the SA/DA option.

Im not a big fan of the shrouded hammer. If you pocket carry one of these do not carry change in the same pocket, it will get lodged in there. If you must have the da/sa option I highly suggest a 637.

Re: New on the Wishlist Smith 438
I don't own a 438, but I do own an all-steel 649. It's a great gun (it's a J-frame--what's not to like?), but I'm more a fan of the Centennial (640, 642, etc.) than the Bodyguard (38, 648, etc.) models.
The biggest advantage to the shrouded hammer isn't the SA capability, but rather the ability to easily check for high primers or detritus under the ejector star interfering with cylinder function.
I'm not concerned about a dime or something similar blocking the hammer, as I *NEVER* carry anything else in a pocket that has a gun in it.

I pocket carry a 638 regularly. Never had an issue of any kind, but I don't carry anything else in that pocket - ever. Definitely, not a range gun, but controllable and the SA is nice to have for shots that are a little longer or require more precision. Biggest piece of advice I have is if you do get any version of the j-frame also grab a Hogue bantam grip - makes a WORLD of difference on such a small handgun.
