I want a 1911... help please
I wan a 1911, like the title says, but I do not wish to spend a lot of money. I know how stupid that sounds when It comes to 1911's but still, I want one, I want a 1911 to be he first 45 I own. What is the cheapest model I can own, and what are the pros and cons, if any, to me buying said brand and model.

id have to say
http://kentuckyarmoryclub.com/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=4010
for the money taurus has a forged frame and slide, many features vs other value guns, lifetime warranty, and this one comes with ammo. if your stuck on a 45 i suppose this is of no help, but the more you shoot it the more it saves you, and you wont have to add a caliber.
in my typical milwaukees best or arrogant bastard approach to everything...if you dont buy mine i dont suggest buying anything less expensive than a $3000 1911.
good luck picking one out...1911 are an addiction

The Taurus above would be a very good start. But you said you wanted a .45 so if you are stuck with that then read below. If not, buy from SNL...give money.
If you have to go cheaper, you could go with Rock Island Armory, the .45's are in the 400 range from Centerfire and you could drive over and get one rather than pay a lot more in Louisville.
They are made in the Philippines and I would not recommend them except I recently acquired a 9mm and the quality seems to good (not great, but ok for starter 1911). I have owned a couple of Norinco 1911 chinese copies of the Colt and most all the parts will interchange. Quality is good and most people believe they are very good value for the $$, when you get them, you can find them for 4-450 usually. I personally really like them.

Buy a Springfield. A norinco is good if you are looking for a project. I wouldn't recommend one for a first pistol, they are rough, poorly finished, and not a good representation of the 1911 pattern pistol.
Buy a Springfield and shoot it. Its one of the best pistols you can buy for the money.

I have only gotten one Springfield 1911 used and the front sight was loose. Never seen it on any other pistol I have had. I think it was the lower model though. I like the Springfield upper models but I think they would be out of the price range.

I got my RIA GI model from Centerfire back in February. I had to replace the out of spec mag catch, but otherwise it has been great.

Re: I want a 1911... help please
You bought it used, who knows if the previous owner banged it on something (its a mechanical connection, things come loose). That being said, two of my Springfields had the plunger tubes come loose, resulting in a binding of the thumb safety when disengaging. Are they economy? Yes. IMO, still good bang for the buck. The only problems I've ever encountered with them are related to staked parts or bad mags. Easy to fix, and it could happen (and has) to others. I will say this: I've never owned a "high end" Springfield, and have had to swap a part or two. However, they get more use than any of my others.Dave1965 wrote:I have only gotten one Springfield 1911 used and the front sight was loose. Never seen it on any other pistol I have had. As for the RIA, good pistol (in my limited experience), I have one. Works good, but I don't place it at the same level as the Springfield.

Beginner 1911 would have to be the RIA. Made on the same machinery as the origional A1, fit and finish is better than some name brand manufacturers, and they serve thier purpose long enough for you to decide you want to throw some loot at a higher end 1911

Rock Island......<$500 and good entry pistol.
My wife says I need a "gun collection intervention"
Re: I want a 1911... help please
Nope, sold them. Won't know when they coming back in. The day I went to get it, a guy in front of me got it. The owner told him to pay for it whenever he could, he had known the guy a long time. You don't find stores like that anymore.Mike wrote:Toddstang wrote:I like my Ruger SR1911. $690 at Oakwood guns
This will be my next 1911 also. Place in Frankfort has them for $629
