I swear i am not trying to start a caliber war here (im sure it may appear that way). I may be posting this thread in the wrong section, too.

Anyway, i was curious about what calibers you guys carry and why.
Im thinking of making a switch to the 9mm (i currently carry a .40)

Not trying to argue which caliber is universally the best or which is most effective. Different calibers are more or less suitable for different people. Just like to know why you carry the caliber you carry.

Really because of availability(when I first started carrying) and capacity. Have carried a .40 before for a while just decided to consolidate some calibers and .40 got the pink slip.

That is truly a great gun IMO. Had one in .40 for the longest then sold it because I had a few other regular xd's in 9mm and they held same as the .40 xdm. 16+1.

I switch from .40 to 9mm a couple of years ago. 9mm was cheaper, mags held a few more rounds, and there wasn't enough of a real performance difference to stay with .40 for me...plus 9mm is a little easier to shoot out of smaller guns.

Of course now I'm carrying an XDS in .45 so what the hell do I know...LOL

That's my carry when I can/use for everything else gun with a TLR1 attached. Love it.

9mm with hydros in my shield. It's cheap to practice with in my carry weapon plus I have a few other 9mm so it makes sense to me. The controllability and availability is nice too.

I love 9mm and will probably have a Shield also. Carrying a XDs .45 now. I love it also... Only owned one .40 and not a fan.

.380 and 9mm for ccw, depends on season and dress attire .45 for home defense. I do have .40 in the safe that see range time. im all over the place lol

I normally carry a .40 S&W M&Pc daily and a 9mm Shield in between.
I like the power of a 40 vs the 9mm from a short (compact) barrel for self defense.
Just shooting around at basic bowling pins and other targets with self defense ammo, the 40 does a lot more damage then the 9mm, with more penetration.
Although I would rather not get shot with either.

I carry any of the 3most popular calibers, depending on my dress, the occassion, how deep my concealment has to be, etc. My primary carry piece is now a Sig P938 9mm loaded with 124gr Hydrashoks. On occassion I still carry my G30 with 230 gr Golden Sabers or Hydrashoks, and sometimes my P40/P11 (change the slide & mags for either .40 180 gr or the 9mm) when I want small with a bit more punch &/or capacity or as a BUG. On occassion, I will stick my PPK in Mrs. W's purse for her to back me up, too.

I carry 9mm or 38 special.

As to why, handgun rounds aren't like rifle rounds. Rifle rounds work primarily by imparting a lot of energy to the target--i.e. busting shit up. That's why a teeny tiny 55 grain bullet at ~3000 fps can rock your world.

Handgun rounds work more like (although not exactly like) arrows...putting holes in vital body parts. Once you have enough oomph to penetrate these important body parts you're good. Obviously bigger holes are better than smaller holes, but the "stopping power" curve is shallower than the capacity curve. As has been said many times, all handgun rounds suck, so more is better.

For *me* the benefit of a larger caliber isn't worth the increased price, increased recoil, and, most importantly, decreased capacity relative to a 9mm. (And nobody has come up with a handgun that can do everything a J-frame revolver can--but that's a different discussion.)

All that said, my car gun is a .45 (Glock 21) with a bunch of spare magazines. When the increased size isn't a detriment, and you can keep 100 spare rounds without your pants falling to your ankles, it is logical to go big.

I carry 357 J frame or a 9mm HK p30 with hydros. I feel either will get the job done.

95% of the time I carry a 45 loaded with 230 gr. JHPs. I trust them to get the job done.
The rest of the time I carry a 9mm loaded with JHPs.

I stick to bonded hollow points and pick the grain weight according to barrel length and how the gun groups with it. As Frailer mentioned, using a handgun is already a compromise over a rifle so I carry the longest barrel length and highest capacity I can. Currently a sig p226 with two 20 round mags.
