Looking to buy an AK47
I recently decided that I'd like to have both an SKS and an AK47. I was able to find an SKS locally but the search for an AK47 has got me somewhat stumped.
There are so many variations of the AK. Mil-surp would be great but I don't know what to look for in the way of which countries produced the better versions.
Then there are the new production units. I have been told by a local shop that the Century C39 is a very good unit. The there are the Zastava O-Paps and N-Paps. My head is spinning!!
There are WASR-10's but it seems like these aren't held in very high regard.
I do know that I would like traditional wood furniture. A stamped receiver would also be okay but would prefer to find a unit with the thicker 1.6mm receiver (to help avoid receiver flex). Milled is even better but I understand there can be as much as a 2 lb. weight difference btwn a stamped and milled receiver unit.
I know there is a ton of info to consider but for those of you who own or have owned an AK, what would you recommend??
Help,
BK

Re: Looking to buy an AK47
Mods, I goofed by putting this in "everything else". Please move to the AK47 forum if needed.
Thanks,

I like the zastava pap that I have. I have both the rifle and pistol. They are both are awesome. The sights on the rifle were great the day I picked it up. (I hand picked my rifle) The pistol is well made and the sights are useless so who cares. Lol

Nice guns but not chrome lined. That's not bad if you shoot noncorrosive ammo.1fastmach1 wrote:I like the zastava pap that I have. I have both the rifle and pistol. They are both are awesome. Which Zastava "PAP" model do you have?? And where did you buy that you were able to hand pick??1fastmach1 wrote:I like the zastava pap that I have. I have both the rifle and pistol. Buds in Lexington is showing the N-PAP in stock for $530 (cash). It is my understanding that the N-PAP has the 1mm receiver and the O-PAP has the 1.6mm rcvr.
Regarding corrosive and non-corrosive ammo, unless I can score mil-surp ammo then I'll be shooting newer production non-corrosive (Wolf, Tula).

Re: Looking to buy an AK47
BK, I have a WASR 10-63. Never a moments trouble. These are available for around $450.00 if you look around. I can also highly recommend the Arsenal brand of AK`s. Very good shooting and well put together. The WASR shoots almost as well, but for a rough and tumble truck or trunk rifle it is very good .
I know not what the future holds, but I know Who holds the future.

Re: Looking to buy an AK47
I have an o-pap. A friend of mine has an FFL and they ordered 10 of them from a wholesaler. I was the third person to pick mine up so I had my choice of 8 rifles. I looked them over and picked the one I thought looked the best. He has since sold all of the rifles. I picked up both of my m92 paps from Sportsman in Elizabethtown.BK Meyers wrote:Which Zastava "PAP" model do you have?? Re: Looking to buy an AK47
I heard bad stuff about wasr10's. I bought one that I looked over real good, basically the front sight, barrel, gas tube were straight, underfold stock is loose but they all are, Mag well was beavered out too much and mags are sloppy, but goes bang every time and pretty accurate. price is right, like was said, for a good reliable beater rifle not all wasr are bad, just gotta look them over good.

Re: Looking to buy an AK47
The deal at Buds really has me thinking. I've never order online from them and am not completely confident in getting a "good" unit. Difficult for me to drop that much money on something without being able to check it out first.kokopelli wrote:any Zastava is a steal right now.

Re: Looking to buy an AK47
they have had multiple problems over the years of using people's cc #'s or leaking them. Many people here have been victims. I would not use my cc with them!Toddstang wrote:Buds online is good to go.

If Century never buy anything Century without inspecting it first unless you like rolling the dice. You can go through a row of Century's and some will be POS, some will be okay, and a few will be perfect.BK Meyers wrote:The deal at Buds really has me thinking. There are criminals among us who are both homicidal and incorrigible. Their parents took a shot at civilizing them and failed. Their school teachers took a shot at them and failed. The odds are overwhelming that government welfare programs and penal institutions took a shot at them and failed. If it ever becomes your turn to take a shot at them, don’t fail.

100% correct advice, Unless its a Zastava- Century only imports them- they are completely built in Serbia at Zastava.
Anything Century actually does anything to besides engraving impot info and serial numbers, always inspect. Closely.

Re: Looking to buy an AK47
I have Zastava O-pap, not the best, but best ak that I have had. Nice solid rifle re-enforced trunion (spelling). Only thing I dont like is the way the buttstock mounts. Very limited to aftermarket stuff since its not like other ak's.
